Last week I started going back to the gym. My main goal is to lose 30 pounds and get back into shape.

I have been doing a 20 minute run on the treadmill and the 35 minute Fat Burn on the elliptical machine. After the cardio I do weight lifting machines 2 for the arms and 2 for the legs (3 sets of 20) after that I have a heart attack then go home.

Last night my friend told me I should stick to cardio only until I lose 15-20 pounds. She said doing weights now will make the fat I am trying to lose turn to muscle and I will be very muscular and not thin down.

Is she right? I thought doing more reps of a lower weight would burn excess fat in my arms and legs and be good for toning.
I would appreciate any advice. ThanksChat Icon

I disagree with your friend. The more muscle mass you build, the more calories you will burn. yes you need cardio to show those newly defined muscles but I would stick w/the weights and cardio combo you're doing. Congrats!! Keep up the good work!

Biologically, fat cannot turn into muscle. They are two completely different types of cells.

Doing lower weight and more reps will not bennefit you. You shoudl mix it up and train each body part twice a week with both higher reps(10-15) and lower reps(5-8).

Doing high reps does not spot reduce fat. It a waste of time and you will see less, if any progress.

This is totally false. First of all, if you're in a caloric deficit (eating less calories than you need to maintain your weight) you CAN'T build muscle.
Secondly, fat does NOT turn into muscle. As someone said, they're 2 different entities.
Third, doing 20 reps will NEVER, EVER build muscle. EVER. Maybe initially your muscles might grow a tiny bit, if you're not in very good shape, but high reps is for building muscle endurance, not size. And like I said, you won't build muscle if you're dieting.

I would do what snowboardgirl said and then also do interval training for you cardio (1 min of sprints, 2 minutes of jogging to recover, then back to sprints, etc for 20 minutes). You don't have to do an insane amount of cardio to lose weight.
And of course eating properly and eating the right amount of calories always helps Chat Icon

Can you meet me at the gym and train meChat Icon I do 4 machines a day 2 for the arms 2 for the legs and I never do the same machine 2 days in a row. I have been doing three sets of 20. Are you suggesting that i should lower the number of reps I do? Would I not get faster results doing more than less? When I finish I can actually feel a burn in my legs and arms so I took that as a sign it is working and I have the right amount of weight. Thank you so much for the advice. My friend must be trying to sabatoge me she doesn't want me to be thinner than her. I was confused by what she said because I figured it is best to do both. I explained it wrong she didn't mean my fat would turn to muscle I think she was saying that I should thin down before I start building muscle because if i start building muscle now it will be on a bulkier me. I don't want to have big butch arms.
Thnk you so much for explaining about high reps. If I am doing lower reps should I try to add more weight or stick to what I am doing now?
I'll try to alternate today on the treadmill. This week I was finally able to jog for 20 minutes straight so I know I am doing better in the cardio department.
I still think the best part about going to the gym is leaving but thanks again for your advice i will make use of it today!!

Yes, if you're doing lower reps you should be using heavier weights. The last couple of reps that you do should be very very hard. If they're not hard, you're not lifting heavy enough.
There is no way that you're going to get butch arms. Trust me, it won't happen! The only time women look bigger from lifting weights is when they eat too much and eat the wrong things. This causes them to not only gain muscle, but a lot of fat too. That's why your diet is extremely important. If you lift heavy and eat right, you'll look nice and curvy and feminine, not flabby and definitely not butch!
