reaching and grabbing

how old was your DC when they could actually reach out and grab something?

DS loves to grab things but he seems to have trouble taking things from me when i hold them up.

or it could just be that he prefers to grab his bib and stuff it in his mouth Chat Icon

he also can't really hold onto a toy for too long - it's almost like he forgets he has it and opens his hand to let it go.

he will be 4 months old on monday, i guess i am just wondering if this is something i should be working on with him.

Re: reaching and grabbing

I was curious about this too. DS is 3 months and really has no interest in doing this. He will hang onto something if I put it in his hand, but not for long. I still don't think he knows his hands are attached to his body Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: reaching and grabbing

I don't remember to be honest with you, but that was right around the time that he began holding his head, so I think he was looking around at stuff more and grabbing not so much.....

I wish I would have kept better track of these things.

Re: reaching and grabbing

Ds is 4 months and he is pretty much the same as you say. When I hold something in front of him he concentrates really hard and then can grab it from me. He can hold onto it for a long time but he doesn't really play with it as much as make spastic moves with itChat Icon .

Re: reaching and grabbing

DS starting grabbing around 3 months.

Holding and playing with toys happened a little later. I want to say closer to 4 months.

At 6 months he is a pro! Chat Icon

eryk reaches and grabs (at 3 mo).... but it's not very coordinated, and it's also rather inconsistent... you never know when or why he'll grab something.... and he has trouble letting go of something he grabbed...

Re: reaching and grabbing

At this point, your DC's fine motor skills aren't developed well enough yet to really hold onto something well....

Cailen did it right on target.

3-4 mts, little interest in reaching and grabbing. Lots of looking, but the idea that he could grab never crossed his mind.

At the end of 4th month, I'll never forget - I have a shoe necklace that I got for mother's day. I was leaning over and talking to him, he was looking at my necklace, and reached up for it Chat Icon

At 5 mts, he didn't grab objects - he loved to grasp and hold onto any type of cloth - a blankie, his bib, a washcloth, etc. He had no interest in holding toys, but a burpy cloth was hours of fun! Chat Icon

I remember around halloween, so he was 6 mts old, we were visitng DH's aunt's house - he was already sitting up very well (Cailen was always very strong like that) and I already brought little plastic animal bath toys for him, so he was already holding items by then. Mind you, he wasn't interested in a lot of toys, and only reached for certain things - anything small and plastic (and the funny thing is, he is exactly the same way still!!!)

At that point, he would clutch briefly, but holding a toy for an extended amount of time was not there yet. That happened by around 8 mts, where I can trust him to hold something on his own while I carried him around somewhere....

Honestly, I always say - if the DESIRE and interest is there - and you can see that, then the action will follow at some point....
