Realtor help...question about house we are renting, that landlord is selling.

We are currently renting a house. The landlord decided he is selling and they are expecting us to show it. We have no problem showing it, by appointment, with notice. However, they just called to say they want to do an open house on Saturday. We do not want this. Besides the fact that we have stuff planned every weekend til the end of the summer, we do not just want to open our house so every and any Tom, **** and Harry can walk in off the street. I am pregant and we have a little girl. There is no way we will leave them the keys, because we simply do not trust people. The thought of someone going through the home I occupy with my stuff, peeves me. So, my question is...do we have a right to deny them an open house? We have not informed them yet, but last week we took a new house and plan on being out of here mid August anyway, our lease is up September 1st. We are livign out the security for August and will be out mid August, they can do their open house then. Can I deny them? Thanks!!

ETA- this place is inshambles too, as we have started packing and there are boxes everywhere. Even though we rent this house, we are liable if anything happens in it, and I don't want anyone in it.

Maybe talk to them ? I went through all thos before ,and even showed the place when I was in labor lol , but it was my place we were trying to sell.

I am currently renting a house ,and in the lease it says if they decide to sell it , I would have to show it ,but it says nothing about open houses. Chat Icon

I know we have to show it, by law, but when, is up to us. And open houses really if It were my house its one thing, but its not and the realtor and landlord don't care about our stuff, they want to sell it, but I want to protect my stuff and my family. I am sorry, there are way too many sickos out there.

I don't think its asking a lot, they can wait a month. Am I wrong. There has been ZERO interest in this place for the two months its been ont he market, they have it priced WAY WAY WAY too high. Why now, they know we will be out for sure in September anyway.

Sorry, i am just so pizzed about this.

I felt the same way ,and that is why I wouldn't show the place w/o being there. We had 1 open house ,and hated not being there. I think they can wait a month, besides they say open houses aren't what sell the place. I would try and talk to them and let them know things are too crazy for that ,and you would appreciate if they waited a month to do the open house.

I would not prevent the owner from setting up an open house. I don't think it's that difficult to plan to spend a few hours out of the house on a weekend as long as it wasn't every weekend and that you are given ample notice.

The realtor will be there so it's not as though the crazies will be able to go through your stuff. I would of course move valuables to a family or friend's house just to be cautious. You could talk to the realtor about you or your DH sticking around if that would make you more comfortable.

I am not preventing the owner from anything. He is a POS (seriously he is). He got this house from his mom, who was our original landlord, when she passed two years ago.,. He very sneakily, had us sign a lease, becaus ehe said the bank needed to see people were living here in order for him to refinance to get money to fix up the house. Well, a few months later he is telling us he is selling and we are stuck in this lease. We asked him to break it, once he told us he was selling and he said no. (of course not, he doesn't want to be paying the bills, mortgage on an empty house). So he is preventing it. We gave him the option of letting us out so he could sell it. He plays games and no we can too.

We have parties to attendfor the next three weekends and nobody will be here to stay at the open house. And two weeks later, we'll be out. If we would be home, I'd consider it, but we've had parties planned for months and calling me on Wednesday, when you want an open house on Saturday in the summer ....sorry.

I called the realtor and he totally understood. He is a nice guy. I told him we'll be out soon enough for the landlord to have open houses.

i know it is weird having your stuff there and you not around, but you had to probably go into other people's homes for your next place.

when/if you buy a home, you will be going to lots of open houses.

as far as boxes around, don't fear - people understand.
