Re: Reasoning behind booster flu shot?
Younger children will need two shots because they don't mount as potent an immune response to the new vaccine. That's the same pattern seen with standard flu vaccine, which also requires a booster dose.
The response in young children is less robust, but this is not unexpected.

Re: Reasoning behind booster flu shot?
Is this the first time she is ever getting the flu shot?
Any child who is getting the flu shot for the first time needs to get 2, separated by at least a month.

Re: Reasoning behind booster flu shot?
I only had to get DD#2 a second booste shot, DD#1 did not need it.
Doctor told me that the package insert actually says something about previous year's H1N1 vaccine and this one not fully protecting if the child didn't have the full series last year. My DD#2 was too young for the flu shots last winter for the most part, and only had 1 shot and it was regular flu. DD#1 had the full series of both regular and H1N1.

She had 2 shots last year...but only regular flu....so that is why this year 2 are needed again?

Last year they didn't have the H1N1 in the flu shot. So your DC needs the extra dose of the new shot for it to work..
