Recommend a shelter, please!

So we are thinking of getting a dog.
We went to Save-a-Pet last week, and they brought out one dog to us. It may just be that only this one dog fit our needs, but I thought it was a little strange. I, of course, wanted to take her home, because I just want to rescue all the animals without homes, but DH didn't feel she was the right dog for us.
We are going to visit LAP of huntington this weekend. We live in Centereach, does anyone have any feedback on the Town of Brookhaven shelter?

I want to stay away from NSAL. I had had a bad experience there when I was a kid with a adopting a kitten.

Also, what are the differences between shelters like Save-A-Pet, NSAL, etc, and the Town Shelters? Are the animals in more desperate need at the town shelters?

Re: Recommend a shelter, please!

I'm sorry I don't have more insight about shelters but I also wanted to mention that if you have a breed in mind, there are local rescues around too. And that the dogs are fostered in homes, so you are more likely to get better information on their personalities and challenges than if they are in cages.

Good luck finding your match. Definitely consider their energy and dominance, and how that fits with your lifestyle. Also shedding and grooming. I hope you find a great match! Chat Icon

We've adopted from Little Shelter in Huntington twice and LOVE them. DH and I both had bad experiences with NSAL so we will never go there again.

NSAL has changed A LOT in the past years.... we adopted our pup there this past march and had a good experience

my friend just adopted a kitten there 3 weeks ago and had a good experience

my other friend adopted her dog from there 2 years ago and had a good experience

and lastly, my OTHER friend adopted her 2 kittens from there a year ago and had a good experience there

Re: Recommend a shelter, please!

The biggest difference in the shelters is that town shelters euthanize and most private shelters are no-kill. Private shelters also tend to be better staffed, socialize the animals better and provide better care - mainly because they have more money to do so.

I had a very negative experience with the Town of Brookhaven Shelter to the point that I was ready to call/write the town to complain about them and how they were so unhelpful that we couldn't even have adopted a dog there if we wanted to - they seemed like we were inconveniencing them by trying to see the dogs.

do not know what size dog you were looking for but we adopted through shihtzu and furbaby rescue...

they are a rescue organization that specializes mostly in the smaller breeds...the process itself was a bit lengthy, theres an application, a home visit, etc but they were a pleasure to deal with and the volunteers who foster the animals are great for info on the dogs temperment...

here is the website addy if you want to check them out...good luck!!

Re: Recommend a shelter, please!

if you don't have a breed in mind, please please PLEASE adopt from a town shelter. they euthanize, so you'll really be saving a dog's life! you can find some great dogs in there too!! I adopted my pitbull from LAP and had a great experience with them! (they even called a month later to see if she adapted well in our house, asked if we had any questions, etc) i absolutely love them! if i am going to get another dog (not for a LOOOOONG time!) then i'll definitely check out LAP first again. little shelter is great too

We went to LAP today and they told us they would not give us a dog because we have babies; that they do not like to adopt our their dogs to families with children under 10.
We also went to Little Shelter, and the two dogs I had seen on petfinder were already spoken for, and they said they didn't have any other dogs that were good with children.
We aren't having much luck... all the dogs I am finding on Petfinder that I think will be great are not available when I call about them.
I just sent an email to Bideawee and NSAL (as much as I didn't want to go there) to ask if they had any dogs that would fit into a 2 baby 3 cat house.

I know you said you had a problem with NSAL.... but for what it's worth, I had a great experience there, TWICE with cats! How long has it been since you had a bad experience?

Perhaps it's worth checking out again! Chat Icon Good luck finding a new addition!! How exciting!

It was a long time ago - about 20 years ago.
I am willing to give them another shot, if they think they have a good match for us!
