We go to Topsail Island NC every year. It's very family oriented and quiet. We love it, we don't have kids yet, but plan to take them when we do.
I assume outer banks is very similar.

We went to Myrtle Beach last September. Love going away in September...its still summer with less crowds.

We go there as well in September. We go to my parents condo which has a pool right outside their builidng and the beach is a short ride. Great for families

for the past 3 years I have gone to Ocean City MD to meet some of my soroity sisters for a weekend. Its not too crowded and most of the businesses are still open. The boardwalk is a lot of fun.
We always go to VRBO.com and look for condos for rent
