Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
Hello everyone! I am fairly new to the boards and I need some advice... I'm currently living & working in Brooklyn with my husband and we are expecting our first child in September. I grew up in Suffolk and I am very familiar with neighborhoods/towns that are appealing to families but I have no knowledge of towns in Nassau... Any advice/suggestions are welcome and would be great! I would prefer south shore since I work right off the Belt parkway and the commute can be a NIGHTMARE from the north shore (been there, done that). Thanks so much in advance for any help that you can offer!

I work in Brooklyn (off the Belt as well) and live in Seaford. It's a rough commute in the morning, but I really like Seaford.

We really liked Wantagh and Merrick, although we choose the North Shore.

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
Im originally from Lido Beach/Long Beach but now own in Oceanside & absolutely love it. Great area & great school district.
PS - Growing up on the beach & now living right on the water is awesome. I wouldnt trade it for anything. But if you look in Long Beach stay West Holme area or East End area - West End has alot of the bars.

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
Lynbrook! That's where we are! My parents live in Howard beach, queens (right off the belt) and we literally could get to them or they could get here in less than 20 min IF no traffic (you know how the belt is). With traffic its a 30 min ride TOPS.
We live in south Lynbrook (south of sunrise). My DH commute via the LIRR and gets into Penn in 35-40 min.
FYI- we are selling our house (not anything to do with the area) but just want to move to further east.

I LOVE RVC but I live in Bellmore...which I also love. If I moved again though, I'd choose RVC.

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
What price range are you looking as that would help narrow it down.
What are your must haves for a neighborhood?

North Massapequa - Plainedge SD. This is where we are, right off the southern state, great schools, actually quite a few nice houses for sale by us now.
We also looked in: Seaford Wantagh Bellmore

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
Thanks so much to everyone for all of your help and valuable suggestions! We certainly have a lot to do and look forward to!!!
We don't really have any requirements except that I would like to be near a train station stop in case I have to commute on the train due to weather or if my husband needs the car (he works from home and city schools NEVER close for inclement weather). I'm not sure if we are going to consider buying yet or if we are going to continue to rent for another couple of years... so much to think about! Thanks again so much!!!

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
On the south shore, anywhere on the Babylon train line in Nassau is great for commuting. That would include, in Nassau, Rockville Center, Baldwin, Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, and Massapequa Park. I used to commute to the city (and my husband still does), and the Babylon train line runs tons of trains, including a lot of express trains during peak times.
Those towns also put you in close proximity to the Southern State, which would be great if you need to take the Belt.
I live in N. Bellmore, and that's where my office is located, so I do a LOT of work in the towns located between Merrick and Massapequa. Plus, I grew up in Seaford and my sister lives in Wantagh (after having moved from Massapequa Park), so I have a lot of personal experience in the area, too.
I am an Associate Broker at Century 21 Dallow, and my contact info and bio is in the business directory, so feel free to contact me if I can provide information on available homes for sale or rentals, or if you just have further questions about researching the area.
Good luck! Christine

Rockville Center, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, and Massapequa Park. Lynbrook is ok, although I feel the other neighborhoods listed are nicer. I'd look for Lybrook schools if you look there.

I moved from Brooklyn to l.I. a few years ago. I'm also a teacher and was also looking to rent. If you're looking to rent for a few years you'll have a tough time even finding an illegal apartment in massapequa, bellmore, wantagh, etc. We looked, with several realtors, for a month. There are "garden apartments" in complexes but the rent is about as much as my mortgage is now!
The areas wih the most apartments (the top floor of someone's house - which is where I always lived in Brooklyn but for the record is usually illegal in nassau) were definitely rockville centre and Franklin square.

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
Both parents and in laws are in Brooklyn we live in Oceanside now and the commute was not bad at all visiting them and now we're movingto Merrick and its probably the same commute bc we're closer to the parkways so I'd recommend both!!

Re: Rec's- Nassau County Neighborhoods/Towns
We are in South Hempstead , RVC schools, affordable, great people, close to parkway. You just have to watch the school district lines b/c not all of south hempstead is rockville centre schools.
