Recurring ear mites?
I'm so aggravated .......... I never had to deal with ear mites in any of my cats until we adopted my most recent cat in May from NSAL. He didn't have them when we took him home, but we noticed it soon after. Since they are so contagious, they spread to ALL my cats very quickly. It's heartbreaking to see them so uncomfortable! One of my cats (I have 4) GROWLS while he scratches himself.
Anyway, we got rid of them.. took a few weeks of ear dropping all 4 cats twice a day... but we took all of them to get swabbed to make sure the mites were gone, and they all checked out fine.
Well... fast forward to the weekend and I started to notice black crust inside 3 of my cats ears and one of them is back to growling when he scratches himself. It's SO sad!! Anyway.. I'm going to the vet today to get them ear drops.
My question is ... has anyone had a problem where ear mites became a recurrent problem? I thought since we got them rechecked and they all checked out clean that we were DONE!
I know ear mites is a pretty common cat issue ... but I get so grossed out by the idea of BUGS in their ears....

Recurring ear mites?
When we had our cat. He was a feral cat and had ear mites. The vet gave us the ear drops and said to make sure to keep him frontlined because that will help with future ear mites.

Re: Recurring ear mites?
thanks! I'm back from the vet.. Apparently using ear drops sometimes isn't enough. My vet said when they sleep, they curl their tails up by their heads and the ear mites could actually live in their tails! If you are just treating the ears, the mites live in the tail since the ears are too hostile with the treatment. He is pretty sure that's how/why they got reinfected.
Right now all my cats were treated with their first dose of Revolution ... which should treat the entire body. We'll do another round of it in 2 weeks and that should hopefully take care of it!
Ahhh gd help me the day one of my kids comes home from school with lice I'll have to have my dh handle that debacle! I'm SO grossed out by bugs!

Re: Recurring ear mites?
Glad to know they are going to be ok!
I remember when lice was so bad back in the early 80s. It was so bad, that everyone had to put their coats in garbage bags in elementary school!!!

My school has had to do this a few times in the past few years
When we adopted our cat, she had ear mites. We used the drops and DH would (veryyyy carefully) clean her ears with a Q-tip...obviously he didn't stick it all the way in her ears. She actually loves getting her ears cleaned, she purrs so loud and just lays there happy as could be. Luckily, once we got rid of the mites the first time, they didn't come back.
