Re: Recycle in the class?????
my school is looking into it....we feel it is very hypocritical of the schools to teach our kids about saving the earth but then not paying the $ to have recycling

Re: Recycle in the class?????
My school has recycling bins in each classroom. During homeroom once a week, each teacher places their bin in the hallway. Student volunteers then come around and put them into a large recycling bin. I believe the village collects recycling along with garbage, but I am not sure
At my old school, they did more or less the same thing, except the bins were placed outside at the end of the school day and members of the Earth environmental club collected them. The club advisor brought the paper to a recycling depot.
ETA: At both schools it is primarily paper. Although in the cafeteria they have can recycling as well.

Re: Recycle in the class?????
We just started this last year! Each classroom has a box for paper... all types of paper can go in ther efrom the kids lunch bags to computer paper to completed worksheets they don't need anymore. Students came around once a week and dumped them into the larger container that would then be taken out by our recycling company (the town).
This year, we've upgraded. We still do the paper, but this time the custodians do it once a week for us. We have now added a bin for recylcling plastics (which is huge...ALL the kids seem to bring in those water bottles... such a waste) and cans. custodians empty and it is collected by the town now... FINALLY!
ETA: I am in a K-5 school. this was spearheaded by a teacher in my building, so whether or not it's happening district-wide, i don't know.

Re: Recycle in the class?????
We have bins for paper and for plastic in each classroom, we have kids bring them down to larger hallway bins at the end of each week. It really adds up. In the first week of school I have them look at how much garbage we use, and then compare again after a few weeks of recycling. The regular trash can is rarely filled anymore. Talk around school si that they want each classroom to start a compost pail, but I have to admit that I am not crazy about keeping that in my room unless it is emptied daily!!
