Red Dye Allergy? Thoughts??
My (almost 4) DS can be a sweet angel (angel is probably a stretch but you know what I mean :) ) and then totally looses it and emotionally breaks down, can't concentrate, gets in a ton of trouble. I also noticed if he has a ice pop before bed he has nightmares and is up off and on all night. Someone mentioned that made he has a red dye allergy and to eliminate it from diet. I have eliminated the red dye at night (ice pops) and he hasn't had nightmares. And trying throughout day but not as easy as I thought as everything has dye in it.
The last straw was last night when my gave my DS medicine before bed (he has the flu) and he was up all night for no reason. And the meds have red dye!
Anyone else have issues with red dye? Or experience with it??
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice!!!

Re: Red Dye Allergy? Thoughts??
Yes, my dd is very sensitive to red dye. We have just cut it out of her diet completely. Her cheeks get a red rash and she is out of control crazy when she eats something with it. Funny as soon as the cheek rash fades normally so does her crazies. My MIL told me that my DH used to have the same exact reaction as a kid. My dd is also very good about not choosing red lollipops etc. I tend to shop at trader joes which makes it easy, but it honestly get very easy shopping once you get used to it.
We have found icepops that use either beet juice for coloring, and they make medicine "dye free." Once you are on the look out for it you almost won't believe how much stuff is out there. On occasion we will let her have a Slurpee or something of that nature, and we will be fully aware of what is to come!
Good luck.

Thanks for the help! Was your DD tested for the allergy? (Not sure if something I should ask about at peds)
Thanks again!

Re: Red Dye Allergy? Thoughts??
My DH had read in one of his health magazines that both red and I believe blue dye can cause hyperactivity and now we are pretty vigilant with what DS eats when it comes to dyes...All the while we were thinking that it was the "sugar" in the goodies and apparently the dye is more of the culprit...
Even Go-gurts (those squeezable yogurts) are jam packed with the dye if you don't buy the new natural ones they have - which I believe are colored with beet juice)
Heres one of many articles on it...

Re: Red Dye Allergy? Thoughts??
I have this. I was never tested for it but every time I eat something with red dye in it I get hives and rashes. It also makes my add worse. I have been off my add meds ever since I got pregnant and haven't been back on them because I am BF so I am naturally trying to take care of it by following a dye free, low sugar diet.

No I never did. My thought was if it does come back that she does have a sensitivity I wouldn't change what we currently do. We went through allergy testing for eggs when she was younger and it was so hard on her.

Yes! My brother and I were both sensitive as children - and Cole is very reactive to all dyes. We're on the Feingold diet - have elliminated ALL food dyes. They are evil nasty things! Most of Europe has banned these dyes already. It's really easy to find natural products that are dye free.

The Feingold Diet is known as the "ADHD diet" - the main premise is to eliminate all food dyes and chemical preservatives. We do it because it's improved Cole's attention and impulse control A LOT - but after researching all these additives we've decided that none of us should be eating this anyway!
Watch the video clip on the top of the homepage for lots more info on food dyes: http://www.feingold.org/

Re: Red Dye Allergy? Thoughts??
Thanks everyone! Definitely going to look into the feingold diet. Can't hurt right! I never heard of red dye allergy until very recently and when I began to eliminate red dye from DS diet I started to see a difference, not sure if it is just by chance.
I read you can test it by putting a drop of red dye (cooking) under tongue and see if "crazy man" appears. Not sure if I will but just a thought.
