Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

I don't remember at all.

On average, how much do they sleep in the beginning?

I am hoping that if the baby is sleeping Jack will have some time to adjust to another little person being in the house and we will be able to give Jack lots and lots of attention.

I would like this adjustment period to go as smoothly as possible for him.Chat Icon

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

My newborn slept almost all day and was up every two hours at night until she was 6 weeks... At 8 weeks she would stay up for an hour after she ate then sleep...repeat.... At night she was giving me 6.5 hour stretches. Now she is 3 months and she is sleeping thru the night 830 pm till 6am...she stays up for an hour then back down till 10amChat Icon She is so good to me lol.

I found that I had alot of time during the day to nap and do errands when she was a newborn.

KJ is exactly one month today and he STILL pretty much sleeps all day ...after eating, he will sometimes stay awake for 30-45 minutes but the rest of the day, it is eat, poop, sleep, repeat...

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

Sadly, my DS NEVER slept as a newborn - and when he did it had to be on me. I am SO SO nervous of having a repeat of this for #2.

That said, I think I am in the minority and most newborns DO sleep all the time. I'm betting your first probably did b/c you would def. remember if he didn't Chat Icon

my dd is 11 weeks old

first 8 weeks i'd say she slept like 80% of the time

now a bit less

The first month esp, she'd be up to eat, and fall right back asleep

Abby's going to be 8 weeks tomorrow and has never really slept much during the day. She has had a few days here and there where she takes alot of naps (and long naps at that) but thats usually around growth spurt time.... or if i have her out shopping alot (she almost always passes out in the car or stroller). Otherwise, she'll take a couple of half hour naps throughout the day. But, she has always slept well at night- like 6-8 hours from the beginning and then would wake up and go down for another 2-3 hours. But then she goes hard all day Chat Icon

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

Mine slept a lot but he was 4 weeks early and I think it is more common for some early babies to sleep a lot, at least until they reach full term. My son slept a lot for the first 6-8 weeks. Then I noticed a difference but he was never a bad sleeper.

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

my DS will be3 5 weeks tomorrow & he only slept for lomg periods of time the first week. Now i will get 30 minute naps here & there throughout the day. The only time i get longer clips is if we go in the car or out for a walk. at that time he will sleep anywhere from 2-3 hours.

nightime he sleeps 3-4 hour clips & even got a 6.5 hour stretch....latelyhe is having trouble & only giving us 2-3 hour sretches

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

They sleep a whole lot, especially during the day. At least my DS did. He woke up to eat every 2-3hrs.
At night, I didn't get much sleep though. DS was up every 2hrs to eat.

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

Yes they really do! I had forgotten just how sleepy they are too. F would sleep all day and only wake to eat. She was also able to sleep anywhere, so we were could get out of the house and go places with T while she slept in the infant carrier.
BTW - I was freaking out about all this stuff before she was born tooChat Icon

The first two weeks, DD was super sleepy and I would constantly have to nudge and wake her for feedings. Now, she's awake a lot more and wanting to be held all the time. I'm getting ready to bust out my sling so I can still chase after DS while holding DD!

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

Yup. I'd say Yael slept 22 hours a day as a newborn. Now, at 3 months, she still sleeps the majority of the day. She can only be up for 45 minutes, an hour most, before she needs another nap.

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

My DD technically is not considered a newborn at 5 months old but she still sleeps ALOT!!Chat Icon Chat Icon She usually goes down at 9pm and doesnt wake up until 7 am!!! On a rare occasion she wakes up at 5 am but will always go right back to sleep after her bottle....During the day she takes a ton of cat naps and one 3-3.5 hour nap. For us we always feel so lucky, she is VERY easy going and laid back; plus her smile melts us so even if she was anitemare we would probably not care LOL! Try to set up a "schedule" however loose it is as early as possible. HTH!

Having a newborn, I can say that YES! They sleep a lot. He's just starting to become more awake and alert not at 1 month old, but for the first 3.5 weeks, alllllllllllll he did was eat and sleep. Chat Icon Chat Icon

both my DC were wide awake the minute we walked through my front doorChat Icon Everyone always said how much newborns sleep, well that rule didn't apply to my DC. They still aren't great nappers, but at least they do ok at night.

Re: Refresh my memory pls....Do newborns REALLY sleep alot?

Mine are sleeping a LOT.....But I hate to say it, Noah is not adjusting well. We thought it would be a breeze b/c he loves babies but the issue is he wants to look at them all the time, and screams outside the bedroom door to see them, and wants to touch them etc, and he wants HIS way, and has horrid temper tantrums.

Ok, the good news though? They wake up every 3 hours, they eat and they go right back down about 15 min's later. They are a week old...they are not up for more then 15 min's an hour, but they are a bit preemie too, I have no idea if that makes any difference?

I think your gonna have plenty of intital time when he first comes home with Jack. Chat Icon

OMG, so much. Other than eating and changing diapers, they sleep constantly. It's a great adjustment period for DS or even the pooch. It was for ours. Chat Icon

Oh no! I'm sure that Noah just needs some time to adjust - it must be so overwhelming - especially since there are two of them!

Do you have help with the three kids? How long will you have help for?
