Refugees welcome: Several states open arms to fleeing Afghans
A bipartisan group of governors is offering to take in Afghans who are being forced out of their country after Taliban forces seized power over the weekend.
"Utah was settled by refugees fleeing religious persecution. We understand the pain caused by forced migration and appreciate the contributions of refugees in our communities," the state's Republican governor, Spencer Cox, tweeted on Tuesday.
Cox has written a letter to President Joe Biden offering to "assist with the resettlement of individuals and families fleeing Afghanistan, especially those who valiantly helped U.S. troops, diplomats, journalists, and other civilians over the past 20 years."

Good. The UK announced they will be taking 20,000. I’m not sure what Germany will do. They probably won’t because elections are at the end of September. I have taught quite a few refugees from this area and Syria.

Not even joking, will they test them for Covid? We are concerned about immigrants that we honestly need to be testing everyone. Also, how about we worry more about getting our own soldiers out first as this is being left up to the Taliban.

I think as long as we have made sure all Americans and Afghanis who helped the US with intel are safe, then we should absolutely be rescuing these refugees. This is absolutely when the asylum path the US has should be used.

I thought we weren't supposed to be scared of COVID? So why are you asking this question? Is pulling our soldiers out, what caused this to begin with?

If Americans go out of the country, they have to be tested (in most places) before returning. Why wouldn't they have to be also?

Refugees welcome: Several states open arms to fleeing Afghans
Why do we view this differently than those fleeing violence in Central America? We should be welcoming to all...

It's the fact that you seem really concerned by immigrants coming to the U.S. apparently spreading COVID but yet you boast about how Americans should just be out there living their lives like COVID isn't even a threat......so which is it? Is COVID a threat or not or does the threat only apply to those who are here but are not American?

You can't have it both ways. Either COVID is a huge health threat and that's why vaccines and masks and protocols are being mandated or it isn't.
At the moment we are still in the midst of a huge deadly pandemic according to our government so if US citizens have to abide by certain protocols then so should any refugee entering our country. You can't have it both ways..

I'm not an idiot, I understand that. However a person can't sit there and say that COVID threats are so minimal and people should go about living their lives like normal but then at the same time complain about the administration for letting people into the country who may or may not have COVID. Like these are the main causes why COVID is running rampant in the US and not the hundreds of Americans who are out and about cramming themselves together without social distancing and are not vaccinated. Or better yet sending their sick kids to school.
Americans in general need to start taking responsibility.

Re: Refugees welcome: Several states open arms to fleeing Afghans
This is why Americans should be put first....
The Biden administration revealed there are no plans to evacuate Americans outside the Afghan capital of Kabul. Officials from various departments including State and Defense, told Senate staffers they don’t know of a way to get those Americans past Taliban checkpoints.
The exact number of Americans still trapped outside Kabul is unknown. However, reports said as many as 15,000 may still be in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton pledged a hotline for Americans trapped behind enemy lines, stating they’ll do everything they can to keep them informed and to get get them out.
“The situation is dire,” stressed Cotton. “But we’ll do everything in our power to help keep you informed and to help get you out.”
In the meantime, the State Department is still advising Americans to continue to shelter in place until further communication from the U.S. Embassy is provided.

Why do you think that Americans are not being put first? The treaty and cease fire that was brokered in 2018/2019 was an agreement that the Taliban stop killing Americans and the Americans would withdrawal troops by 5/1/2021. Taliban stopped killing Americans and lived up to their end of the treaty...what do you think would happen if the US didn't live up to their end of the treaty and withdrawal by 5/1/2021 which of which an extension was negotiated and given to 8/31/2021. (9/11/2021)? Withdrawal of entirety would never be possible given the deadlines in the treaty. What would you (collective you) be saying come 9/1/2021 if the US did not withdrawal and the Taliban started killing Americans again? Is that the better alternative? By abiding by the treaty, there is still leverage to get Americans out...if we broke our side of the deal...that leverage would have gone away.
ETA: ..."Fourth, we have conveyed to the Taliban representatives in Doha, via our Combatant Commander, that any action on their part on the ground in Afghanistan, that puts U.S. personnel or our mission at risk there, will be met with a swift and strong U.S. military response."

Do a little more research, Cookie. The Taliban (unsurprisingly) did not meet all of the conditions for a troop withdrawal. Therefore, the conditions of the treaty were not satisfied.

Re: Refugees welcome: Several states open arms to fleeing Afghans
The Americans have not been put first. I cannot believe that the troops left thousands of American citizens there before the left? The Americans should have been first out and the military last. I know we should have been out years ago, but it feels like all those years there were for nothing. I wish we also destroyed all our equipment before leaving, because it is all in the hands of the Taliban now
Just saw on the news, the Taliban is going door to door hanging people who have worked with the Americans.

Saw that as well, but I think they are going for journalists. The news here reported on a journalist and his family killed. They are also putting out propaganda videos.
I don’t think the US could have done much more by staying there.

The intent was for the Afghan forces that we have trained for 20+ years and spent 2 trillion on to operate as a functioning military. Defend, protect, secure. Didn’t happen.
Now we have Taliban driving around in our Humvees we paid for.
