religious/parenting question

this is not to open a debate it is just a question on what you do.

My husband and I discussed this on Easter and wonder what everyone else will do or does.

Easter has been commercialized and has lost the real meaning of Easter. how do you celebrate your easter by eggs and basket or by the "real" meaning. This just doesn't go for Easter, Christmas also.

Sadly we haven't introduced the religious aspect. It's all commericalized - and as bad as that sounds, it's not so "commercial" to me. For me, it's the link to my childhood - waiting for Santa & the Easter Bunny.

We both recognize we need to figure out how to introduce the religious aspect. For me, I'm not sure how to go about introducing that Jesus died for our sins, when I have a 4 year old that is obsessed with death & a 6 year old that would be freaked out by the idea of people rising from the dead.

For us it's about tradition right now.

I'll deal with the commercialism and religious aspects when they can understand it.

We will celebrate both aspects. I consider us to be a pretty religious family and so one day we will definitely stress the life of Jesus over Santa and the Easter Bunny. That said, I think Santa and all that is a lot of fun!!

We didn't make a big deal over the Easter Bunny and I don't intend to in the future--I don't know, I feel Easter is a much more "serious" holiday. We did buy baskets and a few small gifts and candy. We also go to church, but I didn't explain anything about the real meaning of Easter to my 2.5 year old and 10 month old girls this year. IMO, they're too young. Anyway, we'll be doing both in some age appropriate manner each year. Chat Icon

Christmas was easy to balance both since we had a nativity and she easily learned that we are celebrating Jesus' birthday. Easter is much harder becuase my 3 year old isnt going to understand dieing and then rising from the dead so for now we focus on the easter bunny and we go to church, in a few years we will discuss the real meaning further.

Re: religious/parenting question

For now it is pretty much about commercialization and family. As she gets older she will learn the real meaning, by going to church every week and religion classes or Catholic school.

religious/tradition... it is a Polish tradition to take baskets of food (symbolic) to have it blessed in church on Saturday...

Re: religious/parenting question

Honestly both, but we emphasize on the religious part more. We try for the most part to go to church every week. Also for Christmas my Mom has a tradition where we buy a cake that says Happy Birthday Jesus. And Easter in my church is referred to as Resurrection day. But we also do the other things like Santa, Easter Bunny, Eggs, etc.

ITA! Same here. We do both as well. We did do an "egg hunt" and Grace went to one at her GG's (great grandma) retirement home on Easter. Chat Icon

I intend to explain the the eggs at easter represent "new life" and that Jesus died for our sins, conquered evil, and rose from the dead so that we can have "new life" with him in Heaven. That is why eggs are used and that is what I will tell Grace when she is 3 or 4. For now, she liked finding the eggs and the easter bunny bought her coloring books, crayons, and a little lamb with an Easter story. We also put little Hershey kisses inside the plastic eggs we used. We did not color the eggs this year b/c I felt she was too young for that.

ETA: We go to church as well. At church on Easter everyone greets each other with "He is risen" and then you say "He is risen indeed" back. I am sure by next year she will ask me some questions about it. Chat Icon

Us too, there is definetly a way to do both...when i was little we got TONS od stuff for christmas...but we also prayed, went to church regularly, and i knew the real meaning of christmas...santa was just an extra...with easter too, my brother and I always felt good giving something up for lent etc...no meat on fridays, and we did stations of the cross....like everything else, i think balance was key...i def. want my child to have what I had, christmas and easter were magical, traditional and spiritual in our house!!

Re: religious/parenting question

Thanks ladies for all your responses. I like many will do both for now but like many will do the religious portion when they get older.
I really like the idea of using the egg as a symbol as new life cause that will be an easy transition when they get older to explain why we used eggs.
