Relocating out of state...
Ok, so for those who have done it - how did you do it??
We are thinking of NC. My MIL lives in Sunset Beach, NC - just north of Myrtle Beach, SC. So we would be interested in the Myrtle Beach or Wilmington, NC area. We own a house here and know that we could sell it and build a house down in NC / SC. We just don't know how to get started on finding a job, etc. Ideally one of us would find something (preferably my DH) while the other one gets set up and looks for a job. He is in the Building Mgmt field and he is also an electrician. He said he could most likely find an electrician's job no problem given all the construction going on down there.
But I guess - what are the first steps? It seems like a huge risk. Sell the house, find jobs, buy or build a new house. I don't know where to begin!

Re: Relocating out of state...
I would probably try and find a job and a place where you would want to buy your house. Once you have settled on that I would put your house up for sale here. I don't have any experience with this at all but that's just the order I think I would probably do things.
Good luck!

Re: Relocating out of state...
Hubby put in for a transfer. When that came through he had one week to pack up and move. We had an apartment in NY so it was a matter of packing it all up in one week.
DH packed all the big heavy things, the TV's and refrigerator in a Uhual. He and my dad drove it down. I stayed in NY for 6 weeks and packed the rest of the apartment. During that time I stayed with my parents.
When everything was packed and ready to go I bought a one way plane ticket and arranged to have all the other boxes picked up and shipped.
We stayed with friends of ours while we searched for a builder and had our house built. At the time I was also commuting back and forth to NY at least once a month because the wedding was not to far away. After the wedding and honeymoon I started to actively look for a job. It took me almost 2 months to get a job. Our house took about a year to get built. (we also had 4 hurricanes, concrete shortage and a wood shortage during that time and it delayed construction)

Re: Relocating out of state...
DH and I transferred with our company. It wasn't easy, because in VA we were at the world headquarters so we always had work to do, but here in CO the office is very tiny, so it was hard getting out here. But we came in July to look at houses and then again in November, all the while waiting for our transfer to happen. Once we were relatively sure that we had jobs, we put our townhouse in VA on the market, then bought a house out here.
Good luck!

Re: Relocating out of state...
I put in for a transfer with my company in October, and agreed that I would transfer Feb 1.
Jobs were always the first thing in my head that we had to have before moving. I just felt better knowing that we would have money coming in the door, even with all of the money we had saved.
We went househunting in November, found the house, closed Jan 21, moved in Feb 1. No hiccups!
After we knew my transfer was good, DH started talking to his company about working from home, which they eventually gave into.

Re: Relocating out of state...
I resigned from my company in January and tried for a transfer, setting my "move date" in April. When that didn't work (the transfer) DH and I drove down to house/apartment hunt and look for jobs for a week (staying at my sister's). I changed my cell ohone and made it a local number (anyone could do this) so that we would get more calls and it worked. I got a job first, then DH got a job and we're in contract for a house we bid on while there. Definitely very smooth, very fast...we are very blessed and thank God for the way it's turning out!

I was thinking of that..the area code. True. But basically you guys moved down without firm jobs right?

Re: Relocating out of state...
we found an apt that we are going to move into with a short term lease. I think DH is going to go down first and find a job while I still hold mine. I would hate to go into our savings while we are between paychecks. I am going to start applying for jobs in May, so hopefully I will be set before he goes so we won't have to seperate.
The short term lease is for us to go house hunting.

Re: Relocating out of state...
Short term leases basically is min 7 months. At least that is what they are in FL.
So if you are building a house and they tell you 6 months and then you run into a problem and it will be 9 or 10 months you may run into a problem with the apartment. Even with things in writing it's not a guarantee with new construction. We were told and it was in writing we would be in our house by January, but mother nature had other plans. Unfortunately their was nothing we could do because it fell under the "act of God"
Short term leases are generally 7 or 9 months. And if your house is done earlier then the lease is up you will have to break the lease. Usually that is a month's rent and some penalty fees.
Be sure to be prepared for eveything if you do a short term lease and new construction. The timing will not be perfect.

Re: Relocating out of state...
we came to visit SIL for a week, DH found a job that required training (we needed to be back in GA in a week!!). We also found a house (that fell through) and were working on that while down here visiting.
Try checking out the local paper online for jobs and the job websites for that area and apply, but use someones' address local to the area--otherwise they just don't take you seriously.

Re: Relocating out of state...
We talk about the Myrtle Beach area all the time (my mom lives in Surfside Beach, SC) but in all honesty, career-wise there is NOTHING there for us ...
