Re: Remember this girl?
My DH and ILs are sailors. Serious sailors. Just spoke with BIL and he checked his sailing blogs. There is a TON of talking about this. The majority of people believe that the boat is still afloat because of the alarms that went off. She IS in a serious storm, but the possibilities are still optimistic.

Re: Remember this girl?
its really sad. Am I the only one that thinks the parents were irresponsible to let a 16 yr old do this on their own?

Yup, just saw on the news she is okay and they are going to rescue her.
I cannot imagine being alone in the ocean at ANY age in just a little sail boat. How freakin' scary!

I'm not sure how I would feel about it. There is no doubt that she was prepared and capable to do it alone but still, being alone on the water at ANY age is very scary. I don't know if I would have let her go if I were her parent.

Her brother made the same trip at 17. According to an article I read, she's a lifelong sailor and is very well trained to manage herself and her boat in all kinds of situations but she ran into a bad storm that caused irreparable damage to the boat.
I am glad she was found fine!!

Re: Remember this girl?
I'm really torn.
This isn't an average 16 year old girl. The fact that she can single hand that boat to begin with is a feat. The fact that she can make the needed repairs is another. All the training and experience she has is nothing compared to a regular sailor. I wonder if it was a boy if I would decide easier.

You are absolutely not alone!! 16 is very young! How could her parents sleep in peace at night knowing their little girl is alone on the water???

I agree. her 18 year old brother did the same thing on the same boat last year.
she was trying to beat his record and be the youngest.. umm you should be in school! the parents were on the today show this am and they didn't seem that "with it"
how do you sleep at night with your 16 year old daughter on a boat BY HERSELF sailing around the world I just don't get it

Re: Remember this girl?
I didn't read up on the whole story, so I had no idea that her brother did it. To me it really has nothing to do with her being a girl, its the age that bothers me most.

Personally... I'm going to say nope. A storm is a storm for a boy or a girl and this could have happened even if she was a boy.
That being said.... I just don't think it's safe for ANYONE at ANY AGE to sail around the world ALONE. At least have SOMEONE else with you.
Also, and IDK if i'm the only one who thought of this... but what about those pirates and stuff that go around taking over boats and stuff... this whole thing just seems like an easy target for bad things to happen.
I wouldn't want my kid doing this. At all. I don't care about world records with sailing boats around the world alone. Too risky.
When I read about it... I questioned the parents for allowing the brother and then her to do it. It seems irresponsible to me.

Re: Remember this girl?
I'm in the minority. I think it's great that she's doing this (glad she's OK)
I keep thinking about humans throughout history and 16 wasn't young at all. we have babied our children (and I will probably baby mine when they get to this age).
This girl grew up on the water and was well trained. It could have happened to any sailor.
I'm not sure I could let my child leave, but I'm not going to judge her parents.
