Remodel Question

I am getting quotes for remodel for my mother in law's home. We are moving in with her and making her an in law suite.

My question is, as far as materials (fixtures, tiles, paint etc...) do you take the contractors recommendations of suppliers and go to them for supplies? Or do you go to Lowes or Home Depot? I feel like Lowes & Home Depot would be pricier?

Re: Remodel Question

We did our own shopping and used whatever company/store we like best and/or gave us the best prices. The place our contractor recommended for tile and cabinets was WAY overpriced, even with the so called "discount".

We used a combination of brick and mortar stores and internet sites to get the best prices and biggest selection. Do some hunting around - Lowes and Home Depot are not the only places to shop. Chat Icon

Re: Remodel Question

We shopped everywhere - wherever we got the best prices and found what we wanted.

Some contractors will provide the tile, toilet, etc for you as part of their price and do not want you shopping elsewhere. Find out what's included and what's not with whatever contractor you choose.

Re: Remodel Question

My husband is a contractor and he has a few places that he deals with for materials besides Home Depot/ Lowe's etc. You can usually get a good price on the contractors account.

materials depend on trhe contract he has w/ the homeowner. Some homeowners agree to provide all materials and just pay him for the labor, others he gives them a price and they pay for labor and materials, so he'll just go to the same places he recommends anyway.

Re: Remodel Question

Thanks ladies, I know most people go and get the supplies and pay for the labor. I like the freedom of being able to choose whatever store has what I want...

Do you have any recommendations of places to shop?

Thanks !
