Removing window screens for winter?

This is our first year with window screens on the outside of our windows. We used to have casement windows, so the screens were inside the house.

Do you remove all the screens and store them inside for the winter, or do you leave them on the windows?

I have a huge number of screens, and I'd rather not have to store them in the basement if I don't have to....

We take them out and put them in the basement, but only because the rooms are so much brighter when they aren't blocking the light.

We don't take ours down. We leave a couple of windows cracked open and our cats sit in the windows - I would be afraid they would fall or jump Chat Icon

I take them down and store them in the basement for the winter. I use this time to clean the windows as well.

In the spring I will clean the windows again, scrub the screens and put them back up.

I only leave the kitchen screen on and one bathroom screen on all year just to get some fresh air at times, but they get cleaned 2x/year as well.

We leave ours on. We don't have a basement Chat Icon so we would have no where to putt hem if we did.

We leave them in. I need to be able to open the windows for some fresh air, even if it is cold out.

I take some of the screens off b/c I like to open a window a little for some air. But, I figure the less snow/rain pelting against the screen keeps them in better shape and I like how clear and bright the view is without the screens.

Re: Removing window screens for winter?

My mom takes hers out so that she can see out the windows better. They have a great view and don't want it blocked by the haze of a screen.

I live in an apartment and don't bother.

you took the words right out of my mouth. plus I get too much heat and open the window - can't let the cat get out.

We did this growing up, so that's all I knew. I thought it seemed kind of silly (except for the extra light reason, but that wasn't why we used to do it.), and I really wasn't looking forward to doing it now. I have about 24 screens (not counting the 6 in the basement), so if I can skip taking them all out at once and storing them, that's fine with me... Chat Icon

I'll keep in mind the comment about the light, though. I may take out some of the southern screens to see if it makes a difference. We have bay windows in the living room and dining room, with a huge center window that has no screen, so I probably won't even bother with any of the screens.
