Renting carseats when traveling
Going to Florida with an almost e year old and almost 1yr old. Don't want to bring our carseats bc I think lugging two kids, a stroller, and luggage is already too much.
What has your experience been with renting carseats? Probably using enterprise car rental.
On the plane our youngest will be on our lap. Does my 3 yr old need one? I can't ever remember seeing a car seat on a plane.
ETA: fixing so many mistakes from typing on stupid ipad

Re: Renting caresses when traveling
Based on the title I totally thought this was about something else
The 3yo will be fine with seatbelts; but I rented a carseat once here in NY and it was NASTAY. I don't think it's ever been cleaned and it seemed really flimsy.
I would venture a guess though if you're going to Fla the seats are in much better shape - maybe you can call that Enterprise location and verify that you want a clean and safe seat??

Re: Renting carseats when traveling
I rented a car seat when I went to Hawaii. I did not rent from the rental company because it was twice the price. There a 'mother's group' in hawaii that rented lots of stuff. Car seats, strollers, highchairs, PNP, jumpers, excerisers etc.
They would NOT install it for liability reasons.
They did deliver to the rental company, it was behind the counter when we got there
They also picked up from the rental so i didn't have to bother with it.
I have to say it was an AWESOME deal and experience. $6 a day for a convertible! ($12 if we got it from Alamo Rental)
If I travel again, I'd do it in a snap!

How do you find a "mothers group"? Was this just a Hawaii thing, or this online somewhere for all cities, etc? What a cool idea.

Re: Renting carseats when traveling
Travel agent found me the mother's group thing.
I guess you can google rental carseats.
This place rented cribs, toddler beds etc too so I'm thinking its not just Hawaii. Folks everywhere must have this need!
I have to look into it again when I got to FL this year.
Call AAA maybe they'd know?

While it may be legal in Florida to put a 3yo in a seat belt it is extremely unsafe to do this. Florida has been a little late in the game updating their laws to match the rest of the country.
If you travel often, look into the Ride Safer Travel Vest. It can fit into a back pack. It runs about $120 and can be used from 30lb-60lbs for a size small http://www.amazon.com/RideSafer-Car-Seat-Travel-Vest/dp/B000KCV61U
It's not recommended to use rental seats because they are often times in very poor condition. You also don't know how they were used, if they were in an accident etc.
For the 1yo, pick up a Cosco Scenera for less than $50 bux. It's lightweight and a great travel seat. You can see if the 3yo fits in one. You can bring both seats right on the plane.
NHTSA recommends that all children birth and up be in a car seat on a plane, you can use one for both your children (if the plane isn't full they may allow you to use one for your child who doesn't have a purchased seat). If there isn't room for the 1yo to have a seat then you can gate check it with your stroller.

Re: Renting carseats when traveling
the AAA offices up here allow you to rent them for free if you are a member- I would try the local offices in florida and see if you can do that.
