repair or replace?
the computer for our oven is broken, and it will be $500 to fix. apparently, acc to a dude at pc richards, this is fairly common, since the computer sits on the heat, and getting 5 years out of it isn't at all uncommon.
so the question is, do you guys think it is worth it to repair the problem or replace the unit with an extended warrantee?

Re: repair or replace?
What would be the replacement cost? If it's a $600 stove, then the answer is pretty clear. If it's a $3000 stove, then I would get it fixed.... Of course, I'm sure it's in between those numbers, which is why you're asking, and not going with an obvious decision...
Is it gas or electric? They have different life spans, but several sites I've seen say an average stove should last about 15 years, plus or minus 3 years or so.

Do you have the warranty? They are giving you the choice? I thought if they can't fix it they replace it.

Re: repair or replace?
I would check the cost of a new stove.
FYI: not sure of what stove you have but MIL ha an issue with stove when she moved in to her house- it was giving error codes- she had a tech replace the necessary parts & paid for a new face board (I think) anyhow, it never solved the problem. Occasionally she still gets an error code & alarm (like the timer) goes off. She has resorted to plugging in stove to a power strip & turns power strip off whenever the stove is not in use.
She does have a protection plan for all the appliances, so her out of pocket cos was minimal & she couldn't justify buying a new stove.

repair or replace?
Replacement would probably be in the neighborhood of $1600. We have a gas range. The stove was put in in 2005 before we moved in, and it's out of warranty, so it's purely up to us what we want to do because it is out of our pocket either way. The problem with it is the computer board, which can be replaced, but it will be $500 to do so and there won't be any significant warranty on that (90 days I think). Plus the temperature sensor doesn't work well (we have to keep a thermometer in there) so that needs to be fixed too (but will be a small job).
...I think that answers all the questions?
I don't want to be in a situation where we spend the $500 and it breaks again in a year or two, but on the flip side it's 3x as much to replace the whole range, and we *just* (like a day before it broke) bought an elliptical machine and weren't planning on having to make another big purchase...

Re: repair or replace?
Look at the stove you want and then compare.
In our last house we had a Viking dishwasher. At the time it was 6 years old. We were in the house a year and it just stopped working. We paid to get it replaced because we figured it was worth it for something high end like that...WRONG! We spent $500 and then 2 years later it crapped out again. I ended up buying a Kitchen Aide and so happy we did. Looking back, we should have bought it new after it broke the first time.
I would also check out CR, or do a google search on your make and year of stove. See what other people say and if they got it fixed how long it lasted after that.

It depends on how nice the stove is. if you like the stove, it is "like new" and just has a problem with the board, I'd sy repair. a 1600 stove generally is a nice stove, and if it was kept nice, I'd rather have a 5 year old 1600 stove than a new 600 stove.
