replacing car windshield---does it raise insurance rates?

i've had my SUV for 5 years and drive heavily on the parkways to get to and from work.

my glass is so pockmarked from little stones that cars on the parkway kick up that at times i have trouble actually seeing through the windshield, especially when the sun is shining. it is outright dangerous.

i've gotten 2 little cracks filled over the years from a bigger rock hitting the windshield but the "pockmarking" is out of control.

i have full glass coverage. would this be covered? would it raise my rates? when the last guy came to fill the crack he said my windshield is in bad shape and i could get it replaced since i have full glass coverage, but i'm worried that would affect my coverage since i don't know if it's a claim or not. and if it's not covered, anyone know how much it is to replace it? i need to do something and fast.

anyone know?

It falls under your comprehensive coverage and should not affect your rate.

I have full glass coverage and had the windshield replaced; didn't impact my premium at all. That's why you pay for the full glass coverage.

We had a windshield replaced about two years ago, no increase in our rates.

thanks everyone!

when you had them replaced, was it because of a crack? or did you just call up requesting it without a "reason"? do you call the actual insurance company or safelight (i think that's the name)?

it didn't effect my rates and I had 2 in less then 1 year!Chat Icon

to answer your second question, they have always asked me the reason, and then told me both times that they will fill it when they can (i didn't want it filled I wanted it replaced both times, since they were pretty big cracks), if its larger then an inch (i think) they have to replace it.

I have never asked to have it replaced for any other reason then a crack.

Since its a safety issue for you, I would bring that up to them. but they may considerate it a cosmetic thing and not cover it.

we both had cracks on the windshield from rocks (both from the LIE Chat Icon)

we called the insurance provider who referred Safelite Auto Glass - they're the BEST!

I had mine replaced twice also...both large cracks from rocks on the LIE.
I'm not sure they will replace because of the pockmarks. I know I have a ton of them also, but never thought to replace the windshield over them....

Re: replacing car windshield---does it raise insurance rates?

I had this happen. A small crack that I had repaired and what was left was a starburst. Ok, so I dealt with that. Then driving on the highway a small rock hit and I had a crack that was not repairable. Generally, if it's small enough to be repaired, they want to do that. If not repairable, then they will replace it.

I have full glass coverage w/ Geico auto and had my entire windsheild replaced. I actually even did it at the car dealer, b/c you can go where you want. They just will cover only the set amt that they deem appropriate but I didn't care, I wanted it done at the dealer's autoshop where I bought my car from. I liked getting the factory glass made especially for my car.

My rates were not affected b/c it wasn't a moving violation, accident or any fault of my own. HTH
