Replacing original shower accessories

Does anyone know if the "universal' shower knobs, spouts, etc. and standard shower heads will work on original shower pieces? We have an older house with original Moen shower knobs, etc. and they desperately need to be replaced. I've called Moen up and to replace them with new original pieces are $80 per bathroom. That's just more than I can afford right now, so I wanted to buy the knobs and a showerhead that you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's. The one's I have are just so worn looking and outdated. Do you think these will work? Even if they will only work for a short time. We putting the house on the market really soon and I just need them to work and look nice. Most likely someone else will probably do what they want with the house anyway. If you would have any idea and care to share it with me, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

You could always take the accessories off and bring them with you to HD or Lowes or even a local plumbing supply store and then they could match up the size for you. But I'm pretty sure that must to work with whatever piping you already have. GL!
