Repointing Chimney - masonry question

Our neighbor was up on his roof cleaning his gutters and came by to tell us that the bricks on to of the chimney are cracking and look like they are falling apart. Chat Icon

Has anyone had their chimney repointing? Roughly how much does something like that cost? Has anyone used a particular company when it comes to brick work on the chimney that they can recommend?

I swear these house problems never end. Chat Icon Always something.

Re: Repointing Chimney - masonry question

That happened to us last fall. The company who did the chimney sweeping told us the bricks were lose on the roof. One of the guy actually picked up one brick in his hand to show DH.

I think they charged us $650 (I think!!) to redo the brick work, mortar, etc...

ETA: The sweeping company did the job.

Re: Repointing Chimney - masonry question

We need someone to come in to clean out the chimney and see if any of the brick needs to be repointed (it looks like it could use it in some spots), etc.

We were given a recommendation from our Engineer - every recommendation we've used from him, we've been very happy with - so we're going to give this guy a call. I'll look up the name/number for you tonight.

Re: Repointing Chimney - masonry question

We had our chimney re-pointed by Chimney Doctors - they gutted our entire chimney and did the re-pointing, re-did the flashing and installed a stainless steel sleeve. We were VERY pleased with their work and the price wasn't bad. I don't know how much the pointing was specifically, as it was all done together, but they were the most professional out of the 5 companies we had look at our chimney.

Here is their contact info: 631-225-4624, and this is the website:

Good luck!
