REPOST FROM PARENTING: School Counselor worried about people during the holidays

I am putting this out there because it may make me feel better knowing we are all looking out for each other.

Just remember during this holiday seaon that not everyone is feeling so merry and for some, it brings up many difficult emotions. I know we are all busy running here and there to find the perfect gift, or create a great holiday meal. If you could just take a second to listen to a friend, a teenager, your child and really hear what they have to say, you may save a life.

I know this is a sad and depressing post but I am hoping we all just stop for a second and be there for each other.
Thanks for letting me get that out. I feel a bit better now.

So heartbreaking...what on earth could move a child to the point of attempting to take their own life? Chat Icon

I know being a teen is hard, but still. My heart breaks for your student. Thank god her friends stepped in and did the right thing, they saved their friend's life.

First off, I am sorry to hear about your student. I hope that she gets the help that she needs.

Just wanted to point out though that I would be super paranoid sharing such a personal issue that could get traced back to you.

This site is NOT that anonymous and I think as a counselor don't you need to protect that student's confidentiality? ;)

C,

I totally agree. This economy has really taken a toll on many, many people.

I've been teaching almost 20 years and I can't believe what is going on in the lives of so many of the students in my school. Devastating, multiple family issues!!

There are just so, so many. I used to be able to pick a few each year and really take the time to help them, follow up, referrals to administration/counselors, etc.... there are just so many the last two years and add to that increased class size, added preps/responsibilities and it's so hard to keep tabs on themChat Icon

Thank you for this. As someone who is going through a very difficult time I can't imagine how tough it would be without the couple of people who have truly been there for me. I feel like everyone else has drifted away because they don't know how to help, don't have the time, or just don't care. It only takes a little effort to slow down a bit to stop and listen.

I have not shared one part of information that would tie it back to anyone. I am not even in this state. Trust me, that is ALWAYS my first priority but thank you for your concern.

Again, you went into great detail regarding what occurred. Regardless of the location you also have pics of yourself on here. This is not an issue I would want to risk but I guess we will need to agree to disagree on this.

I am sorry for that family and that you have to deal with this.

Thank you. In interests of being extra worried, I am deleting the original post. I don't want to have to worry that the person in question will be identified. I do hear your sideChat Icon
