Repost from Teachers - for all you preggo teachers

Are all teachers entitled to FMLA?
I never hear this used in my district - everyone just goes out on leave. So my question is, when I go out on maternity leave, will I be entitled to FMLA? (I am tenured and have been working for more than the required # of hours in the district).

I am concerned about the continuation of health insurance when I am out. I am due at the end of January and would like to be able to take the rest of the school year off, but I carry the health insurance.

I believe that FMLA only applies to job protection.

Definitely talk to a union rep about benefits continuation. I have heard in a few cases, that teachers had to work certain days to keep their benefits active.

I don't know if things are diff b/c im in fl, but from what my friends have told me - we're covered for the month of the birth, then we are taken out of the system - including email and payroll, we are changed from 12month pay to 10month pay, so they will no longer take out summer/holiday $ for us to have when needed, we'll get the full lump sum. My friend stayed on extended fmla and she has to pay for her/baby health insurance $500 p/mo

i thought teachers got great coverage until i started looking into it. i hope for ur sake, its just like this in fl...unfortunately for me, I will soon find out what it will be like and from what I've heard down here...it s ucks....
