Repost from TTC; Genetic Testing

So DH and I have discussed getting genetic testing before TTC. I am only 23 and DH is almost 25. However, I had an Aunt on my dad's side born mentally retarded. Since we aren't close with my dad's family I'm not too sure exactly what was wrong with her.

This may sound immature, but what is actually tested when one chooses to have genetic testing done?

Who decided to have it done and what made you decide to have it?

Finally, is it covered by some insurance policies? I know all policies are different but I was just curious if you had to pay out of pocket.

TIA everyone!!!

Re: Repost from TTC; Genetic Testing

we had testing prior to TTC for Cystic Fibrosis as my first cousin has it (which means I could have very well been a carrier, which I am not).
I would speak to your doctor and see what s/he things about it.

My husband is Jewish and there is a specific panel of genetic tests for people of Jewish heritage, so we had those tests done. We did the tests after I was already pregnant and insurance covered them.

My father is Jewish so I had the same panel done. It turns out I am a carrier of Tay Sach's, thankfully my DH is not!!

I believe that other than some "ethnicity" related conditions as described above and CF you can't really test prior to pregnancy. Conditions such as down syndrome etc. can only be tested while pregnanct because it is not necessarily genetic but rather a chromosonal "fluke".

Re: Repost from TTC; Genetic Testing

Now I am Eastern European Jewish but someone at work said I had nothing to worry about since DH is Catholic. She said we both had to be carriers in order to pass it to our child and since he isn't Jewish he's Catholic it can't happen. Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense. My dh is Irish Catholic and the doctor still strongly advised that I be tested for 2 reasons. Some genetic disorders such as CF and Tay Sachs could affect him as well. Also he said its good to know that I'm a carrier b/c my child has a chance of also being a carrier. It's something she should know for when she's older.

Thanks for the info! I will talk to my midwife tomorrow at my appointment!
