reproductive endocrinologist.
I posted on ttc liw about this but the board has been kind of slow so I figured I would join LIF and see if other people could help me out.
First off hi, to everyone on here. My name is Melissa.
I went to the obgyn today and she suggested I go see a reproductive endocrinologist. DH and I aren't ttc this minute but we want to in the next year. I have pcos and they feel that it will be difficult for me tc. So when I called the reproductive endocrinologist the receptionist basically made me feel like if we weren't ttc this minute, why would even come in to the see the dr. Is the R.E. only for people ttc right now, or will they help me with my other pcos related issues?

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
I'm sorry I'm not actually sure...I'm sure some of the other girls on this board (several have PCOS) will give you advice - just wanted to give
I'm surprised that your OB has nothing to share with you about the condition or things you can do before ttc......

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
First---welcome!
Second--i'm surprised the ob/gyn just immediately said go see an RE if you aren't TTC yet. has your ob been trying to treat your PCOS in anyway? have you gone thru bloodwork and sonograms to verify the PCOS? are you on any meds for it? It just seems like a jump if you don't have any other issues going on. How old are you?
I have PCOS and I'm on Metformin for it as well as my diabetes. My doc didn't say I needed to see an RE just yet -- since we had to put TTC on hold while I get my sugar under control from diabetes. If we start TTC and it doesn't happen naturally at first, then I would consider an RE.

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
There are a tons of websites out there for people with PCOS such as Soul Cysters that might be helpful for you.
You might be able to go to just a regular endocrinologist to start managing your PCOS and then consult with an RE when you are ready to begin trying to conceive.

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
I've been treating my pcos since I am 17. I've had all the blood work. I wanted to come of birth control because we want ttc soon. I've been to a regular endocrinologist and they put me on a metaformin but I am not getting my period regularly on that. So she (the obgyn) wanted me to see a reproductive endocrinologist, I just feel like maybe its weird for me to go there. The receptionist sounded shocked and even asked me why I was going to if I wasn't ttc right now. I have no idea what to expect there.

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
Hi Melissa,
I mostly lurk on all of these boards but had to reply to your post. It is never too early to go to a RE in my opinion. If you still aren't getting your periods regularly, you may want to try and regulate them BEFORE ttc. This way, when you are ttc you have a regular cycle and your chances are better. I would also go just to find one that you like and establish a rapport. It is always important to have a plan BEFORE you start ttc so you know exactly what to do when you are ready!
Best of luck to you!

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
Thanks, well I am still going to go to the appointment, to see what they have to say. I feel a little better about everything today, and hearing what all of you had to say.

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
I first saw an RE before we even got married, knowing I had PCOS. It was nice to hear some info my OB/GYN didn't tell me plus to hear and start thinking about treatment options. I'm very surprised they were "shocked", I have heard many women say they went to an RE before TTC due to known issues! GL!

Re: reproductive endocrinologist.
Most RE's goal is to get you pregnant. If you are not TTC right now, IMO there is not much the RE will do for you. The RE's course of action/treatment is usually agressive as like I said, their main goal is to get you pregnant. There is not much you can do to treat PCOS other than be on BCP or Metformin. What PCOS related issues do you need help with?
