Request for Prayers - Update 9/18
Just got the dreaded phone call that my ultrascreen came back abnormal. I have a 1 in 23 chance of having a child with down syndroms. Me and dh are devastated. We see a genetic counselor tomorrow. I am so scared. DH has expressed many times before I was pregnant that he would not want to raise a child w/ DS. But this baby is a miracle for us. It took us 12 months to conceive and the it was a result of an IUI. In good conscious I cannot pray for a baby only to terminate it because the baby has DS.
So I am basically asking for prayers that this turns out alright. I still have a 22 out of 23 chance of having a normal baby, but when it's bad news one tends to lean on the smallest percentate. If it's positive, for me the worst is yet to come and for me that is so very freightening.
TIA Update 8/29 Just wanted to thank everyone who has sent their prayers and well wishes. Me and DH saw a genetics counselor yesterday and are both starting to feel better about our situation. Our odds actually went up if they discounted the nose bone which apparently is considered contraversial when done during the ultrascreen. Taking that away our odds went up to 1:134. So much better and we feel a lot better. We have decided to go for an amnio in a week and a half. At this point we would like to know for sure. We have agreed no matter what they we will keep this baby and so its just a matter of preparing ourselves as needed. Thanks again for all of your support.
Update 09/18 Yeah, all your prayers worked. I am having a healthy child. So excited and very relieved. Thanks again for all the prayers and support.

Ditto-please do not do anything rash-we chose not to do these tests at all and go one ultrasound-if anything is of concern we will then consider other testing. Good luck and try to stay positive. If you do have an amnio ask for FISH results so you get them quickly

What is a FISH?
I am not sure what it stands for but here is an explanation:
A faster method of analysis, called FISH for "fluorescent in situ hybridization," involves using special dyes targeted to specific chromosomes. Each dye glows a different color under fluorescent lighting. At present, we can only test for four or five different chromosome pairs using this technique. Normal cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes; an abnormal fetus may have an extra chromosome or may be missing one from a pair. Since we can't test all the chromosome pairs using FISH, this method only picks up a portion of the potential chromosomal anomalies that may occur. Luckily, the most common problems are picked up using this screening method. As results from this test can be available within a few hours, FISH is gaining in popularity.
