Re: Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
They should be ashamed of themselves. And its not just the homeless, its the elderly and anyone in need of a meal. How can you deny people a decent meal? How can you deny people a nice atmosphere to share with kind hearted souls? I just don't get it

Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
Wow...they sound like a bunch of entitled brats.
I would be mortified right now if I was one of those residents in that picture or who gave a quote with their name. How do you go to bed at night when you project such disgraceful morals???

Re: Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
I love that these people are in the paper with their names. The had to provide that themselves, so clearly, they aren't embarrassed. I thought I read somewhere else that it is proposed for Monday nights.
I can totally see how 50 senior citizens & moms with their kids are going to increased what must be already booming Monday night traffic.

Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
This is horrible! Those residents should be ashamed of themselves. was the church just being nice letting them know their plans, or can they not go through with it now?

I think the church had to apply to the Village anyway for a permit since it is a residential neighborhood--the church was probably there from before current zoning laws existed. And villages typically have really annoying laws.
Anytime there is a public hearing like that, people can dissent. ( Like if you need a variance for construction project.)
I can't find anywhere if the zoning board made a decision or when a decision is expected.
The lady who said this doesn't belong in a residential neighborhood with kids is nuts--
What neighborhood doesn't have kids?
The suggestion that they would cook & bring food to other neighborhoods is also ridiculous. As in oh no, we couldn't possibly have poor people here.

I think it's important to look at the possible reasons why these residents are concerned. I take it as though they are concerned that "free" meals could bring people who are possibly homeless due to drug or alcohol use. I think that's a valid concern to have and that's why they said a "residential" area with "children". I think it's only fair to see their side of it and ask what are their concerns, before jumping to call them names. (not directed at you, just saying).

People aren't going to travel for a free meal once a week. They can't afford to between the cost of gas and/or public transportation if they are already struggling. And if they are drug addicts/alcoholics they will save their money for the vices.
Their only concern is selfishness and not wanting to admit there are people in need next door.

this was my thought too about drug addicts and alcoholics ... doubt they will waste their money traveling there and if they are there they most likely lived in the are before this programed opened.

Re: Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
I would think that when purchasing a house on the same block as a church I would expect that the church would minister to those less fortunate. And I am sure the Sunday church traffic is more excessive than it would be at a weeknight food pantry.
In the article one of the residents said - their mission is beautiful but not in a residential neighborhood where there are children.
What do they think hungry folks are going to do? Eat their kids?

From the article:
"As her neighbor Colleen Castelluccio put it: "Their mission is a beautiful mission, but not here in a residential neighborhood with children."
We wouldn't want our children seeing a "beautiful mission" now, would we?!?!?! How could a parent ever have that "talk" with their child to explain what the church is doing - what a difficult convesation to have

Re: Residents oppose Church's plans to feed the homeless
Yes, what they should probably do is set up a soup kitchen on a desert island somewhere off the coast of Captree and ship all the 'undesirables' over there once a week to get their free meals.
This way residential areas with children won't have to be exposed to such distasteful things as people falling on hard times.

Don't forget the parking and the litter. Cause you know, those hungry SOB's will pry open that can of soup, suck it down and toss that sucker right onto their lawns!!

I have volunteered at soup kitchens before.
Anyone who thinks the above is very, very ignorant about who is in poverty, how it affects them, what their options are, and where they live.

And that they may be. Which is why a discussion probably needs to be had to educate.

I'm sure there has been plenty of discussion - but it sounds like the people who are so concerned don't want to hear anything. They've made up their minds that a church helping those who are in need will somehow hurt their neighborhoods, their kids or whatever. I really don't htink any amount of discussion would change most of these people's minds.
