Responding to calls question
I am currently subbing in 3 districts. Hired in 5. On my last interview the principal told me not to spread myself too thin. I just got another call last week from ANOTHER district (that I would work in) and yet another one for a permanent sub but really far from home. What should I say when I call these people back? I am really not interested in adding my name to any more schools yet I don't want to blacklist my name there...

Re: Responding to calls question
why would you be blacklisted for turning down a subbing job?
just tell them thank you, but at this time, you're already subbing in 5 districts and would not be able to provide the time and service that they need.
turning down a subbing job won't hurt your job prospects in the future, unless you did something really bad or inappropriate, which you obviously aren't

Re: Responding to calls question
if you want to the one sub job that just called you take it and drop another that you may not see the opportunity of getting hired in.

Re: Responding to calls question
are you working everyday? if not, i would take offers from each district hat calls... if one calls, couldn't you just say you're at another school that day? this way, you don't burn any bridges....
but if you really are working full-time between the other schools, i would tell the new districts that...thank them for their interest and that you would be interested in hearing from them in the future re: any long term sub positions and/or leave replacements/tenure track jobs

Re: Responding to calls question
I know the feeling, thats why I LOVE the districts that have the online system, work if you can and thats it.
but one new district I just started working for, I just told them NO the last 2 phone calls (they dont do online ) so I also feel bad and hate it
but they know that when I have childcare "booked" that I grab the first job that comes my way.
it's the nature of subbing, they should understand that.
maybe just limit yourself to the three "best" ones (whatever best means to you, if that makes sense)

Re: Responding to calls question
It depends what you want to do - do you want to have a job everyday? the perm sub can do that for you and you will be known in the school if any jobs open up.
you can have a job everyday with the other schools, but you might not be as well "known" and might have to work harder with them.
If you don't want to work everyday - then I would politely turn it down, saying that you are on other lists and cannot commit to everyday - then ask if you could be on the list for per diem work.
