Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

The man did not need to speak to you like that. You were trying to quiet him down and I am sure you were more distressed about the situation than anyone else.
People are increasingly judemental and decreasingly compassionate.. It's just so sad. Things like this happen, I know it is going to bug you but make a deal with yourself that you won't let it hang over your head for more than 24 hours.
This is the deal I made with myself earlier this week when I locked my child in the car. I was beating myself up and couldn't get it off my mind. I made myself the above deal and now I feel like its been lifted off me.

Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

I would have lipped out if someone said that about my kid, no matter if they were being a bit noisy. When you go out to a restaurant, you have to expect that there are going to be people with children, and that children are sometimes loud.

Do not feel bad, I think that a-hole that said that was in the wrong.

Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

I am so sorry that happened to you. We actually had the opposite. We were seated near a table of adults on Tuesday night that were so loud we couldn't have a conversation at our own table. But I would never think to do that to them. For whatever reason when people see children they think they also have a license to say whatever they want/parent and it's not right.

Don't give up though. My daughter was difficult in restaurants but we kept plugging away. We would go at off times or out of the way places until we were comfortable with her behavior in a restaurant. I am sure if your son has sensory issues a loud restaurant could also be very overstimulating for him. Keep trying and don't let one idiot keep you from eating out again.

Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

I would have told that man, "Yes, my child might be loud, but I am going to raise him to have better manners than YOU. YOUR mother must be ashamed that she raised such a rude son..."

OMG that is disgusting behavior for an adult. Stay home if you don't want other people to bother you. I am so sorry that happened. How awful.

That man was incredibly rude and insensitive. Sure, a screaming child is interruptive during dinner, but there's no need to react like that.

I work with children with sensory issues (and then some) and I know how hard it is for the parents to take their children out in public. My heart goes out to you. Don't let this discourage you from going out again. It is healthy for both you and your DC to live as normal a life as possible. People only respond like that because of ignorance... you are not doing anything wrongChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly - don't give it a second thought.

As you said you made every effort to quiet him down & it didn't work. Sometimes every trick in the book doesn't work. I've walked my kid outside for almost the entire time while waiting for food. Sit down, ate & then DH walked him around outside while I finished up. You did what you could & it doesn't always work -sometimes it doesn't even work on a 6 year old.

You weren't eating in a quiet, romantic restaurant. You were in a pizza place. A place entirely appropriate for children.

This isn't a issue over your child or sensory issues. It's an issue of someone else being a complete @sshole.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That man's behavior and that of the people who clapped was a lot worse than your son's. He's a child, they are adults and should have acted like it. It's one thing to be annoyed, but to say something like that is mean. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

That's just horrible, it really is. I don't know what exactly is going on with your son, but I"ll tell you this - what you describe is perfectly NORMAL toddler behavior. Alex ALWAYS starts screaming and singing and playing and kicking and (you get the point) whenever we go out to eat.

If I were at a fancy restaurant, I'd remove her immediately and wait outside until everyone has finished, and I've certainly done that before.

BUT YOU WERE AT A PIZZA PLACE!!! By it's nature it is a family restaurant - that guy was completely out of place for yelling like that, particularly because he cursed in front of everyone Chat Icon

I would be more embarassed for him than you - don't feel bad at all Chat Icon

ETA: YOU should not have left, the moron that yelled should have been asked to leave! Chat Icon

ITA

It was a loud FAMILY restaurant what did this guy expect?

And to spew the F-bomb clear across a restaurant, any public place and especially where there are children is absolutely UNACCEPTABLEChat Icon

If people were that irritated, they should have calmly spoken to the waitress/hostess and they in turn speak to you.

It's not like a life or death situation occurred, no excuse for cursing across a public place.

You are entitled to be there just as much as he. Your son has to get accustomed to such places and how else do people think you are going to do that.

What ever happened to giving people the benefit of the doubt?Chat Icon It's not like you were ignoring an undisciplined child, you are really trying.

Re: Restaurant Incident tonight

We have had something like that happen to us when we go to Applebee's. DS is 14 months old and likes to talk and everytime we go we get nasty looks from other people around us because they think that DS is making to much noise. We always stay because DH says that if it is a kid friendly restaurant than they have to understand that children are going to make noise.

DH would of gone crazy if he heard someone say that about DS.
