RESULTS on Jacob's E.I eval...
Ok, so two women came last week to evaluate him, one speech therapist and one special Ed teacher. They spent an hour with him and told me they couldnt tell me the results at that time.
The speech therapist called last night and said that although he shows a slight delay it is not enuf to qualify for services at this time. They basically said that he falls into the category of a 13-16 month old, more like a 14 month old. (He is 16 1/2 months old) They said that is not THAT much of a delay and they want to re-evaluate him at 20 months. He would need to be showing a 25% delay in the areas that they evalated and although the speech part is def not there, he DOES understand SOME things.. just not all. That is the area they are more concerned with.
When they were here, they asked him "Jacob where's the ball?" and he didnt respond. And, "Jacob, where's Mommy?" and he didnt look at me.. but other things like can I have that he responded to, and can you put the ball in the cup he did also. So basically its what i've said all along and that is that he is very inconsistent and they say it can really be his age right now too. So by 20 months they want to hear me say that he is speaking at least 10 words and understanding EVERYTHING, pointing to body parts etc.. and if not, they will come in again, and most likely he will qualify for services at that point.
They said alot can change by then but I guess we will have to wait and see. In the meantime, I am trying my best to work with him myself. Show him things, use the hand over hand method to point to objects and things like that.
So thats the update, thanks to everyone who was thinking of us!!!!

That sounds like good news! I think you have the right attitude about it too. My son was also evaluate at age 2 and did not qualify. It was amazing how soon things just explode for him right after that. I am sure you'll see the same thing.

Go Jacob! Thats good news, hopefully by 20 months he will be able to say things like "Mommy, I would like to go to sleep now" and "Mommy, please wake me at 10 am tomorrow morning"

Re: RESULTS on Jacob's E.I eval...
That's GREAT news! Just make sure you stay on top of them in terms of evaluation because unfortunately a lot of the kids who *just* meet the minimum criteria, slip through the cracks because they technically don't qualify for intervention (that's actually what happened to me, and my mother had to fight tooth and nail for almost a year until the school district agreed to provide us with services). So, even if he is just meeting the development milestones, if you have a gut feeling there is something else going on, push them on it.
I just want to say, I'm so happy mom's like you are providing such a wonderful example of being involved and proactive

Re: RESULTS on Jacob's E.I eval...
THat is great news! Things could change for him in a matter of weeks. We just had Jack evaluated for his stuttering and he qualified for services, but in the past two weeks the stuttering has totally disappeared and he is talking in full complete sentences. So I'm thinking that his stuttering was at a point when his brain was processing all this new info, and it took a while for it to all work itself out and then bam! he's telling me things like "Scoot back Mommy..I need more room to play trains." I was like "What...when did you start to talk like that!"
Anyway, my point is that you are doing the right thing and Jacob sounds just fine and he will probably surprise you and his skills will just take off one day!

Re: RESULTS on Jacob's E.I eval...
Thats good news! Friends of ours had their son evaluated at the same age for similiar issues and he also would not respond to questions like were is mommy? After 6 months of services he improved greatly, and no longer needed then, but most likly would have done the same on his own.
Some of the suggestions that they felt helped was to put some of his favorite toys slighly out of reach so he would have to ask for them and interact more and not to have everything readily accessable to him. Also even when he gets fustrated that he cant reach something, make him work thru the fustration and tell him to use his words and say "I want the truck" or at least "truck" ect..... The parents found it hard in the beginning to see him fustrated but in the end it forced him to interact more and use words. HTH!
