Review of my Cruise to the Bahamas! VERY LONG
Dh booked a short cruise for us for our bdays-he is April 5th and I am April 6th. He got a great deal on an Oceanview Cabin leaving from Port Canaveral Florida. We drove down (since we are living in GA). It took us about 7 hours with stopping for food along the way. It was a fun drive and went quickly.
Ship: Sovereign of the Seas-Royal Carribbean-an older ship, but has been remodeled in the past few years.
4 days- 3 nights Ports: Nassau and Cocoa Cay-private island owned by Royal
!
Our Cabin: On the smaller side in comparison to other ships we have been on. Clean, but old No safe in the room, this was annoying since we had to bring our valuables to the Purser (safe deposit box) each day
Pools- one was for adults only, which was nice-apparently there were 3 pools, but we only noticed 2. The pool was very big compared to other ships we have been on and VERY clean! We never had an issue finding a spot with a lounge chair either which was good...I hate waking up super early just for a chair, but we didn't have to do that at all.
Voltage- Dance club- Really big in comparison to other ships we have been on...Really nice-fun-good DJ (our celebrity cruise had a terrible DJ)We danced a lot-varied music!
Boleros Lounge/Bar- Fun, Latin music, Piano players-
Shows: GREAT SHOWS! two hilarious comedians, a magic/comedy show, decent singing and dancing!
They had the ever so popular Love and Marriage Game-of course a good time!
and Quest Game Show- This was such ball! We sat with another couple-one of the couples we ate dinner with-they were a lot of fun- lets just say, bras were off-men's pants were off, along with shirts- skipping men w/o shirts and wearing lipstick...it was a great time!
Dinner: We usually like to sit alone, however we forgot to mention this at booking, so we sat with two other couples. One was a couple in their 50's...very odd couple- but very nice- they kept buying the table drinks/shots- the other couple was in their 30s-we had a lot in common and got along really well-
Service: it was good- wasn't the best service I have had, but absolutely acceptable- timely-one waiter kept wanting to play games with our table and we weren't really into it- BUT, he was very nice-the head waiter was terrific. One night there was shrimp cocktail- but our table requested it every night- our waitress said there was none-but the head waiter "found" it for us and had it for us each night! When DH booked he put down that we were celebrating our bdays---they didn't remember to sing to us until another lady at our table told the waiters-the woman we became friendly with had her bday the same day as I did- so they sang to all of us and brought out MORE dessert!
Food: The escargot was the best I have had on a cruise! The food was VERY good! The 2nd night was my favorite- they had so many choices I liked and I couldn't decide what I wanted. The last night- None of the entrees really stood out to me as exciting- and my New York Strip Steak came out cold- I didn't send it back- I know they would have been very apologetic about it, but it was fine, no biggie
Chocolate Buffet! YUM! Loved the chocolate covered strawberries and coconut truffles! I was expecting a chocolate fountain but they didn't have any
they have a pizza place on ship called Sorrentos- pizza was good
Johnny Rockets had a $3.95 cover Ben and Jerry's was a charge too
they had free ice cream/cones on the ship though too
Windjammer Buffets-Breakfast was okay-nothing to write home about-but good
Lunch-we heard it was VERY good, but we never had it
Nassau- We went to Blackbeard's Beach and snorkeling with the sting rays! This was a good time. It was $49.00 pp. They transfer you to the beach by boat- about 20 minutes- then snorkeled and then we laid out- few hours later we went back on the boat which took us back to Nassau.
From there, we took a cab to Paradise Island/Atlantis. Cab was $5.00pp plus $1.00 to get on the island.
Atlantis is Spectacular! We plan on going back! We paid $32.00 to get into the aquarium...but then had access to the rest of the resort-we weren't really suppossed to, but no one said anything to us-actually if we would have gone in a different way, we wouldn't have paid anything at all...oh well. they have EVERYTHING you can think of there... INCREDIBLE! There are so many pools I lost count! Water slides-lazy river-kayaks,other water sports-beaches-restaurants abd bars galore-the aquarium-it is just amazing!
After we spent a few hours there- we headed back to Nassau- did some shopping- walked around- then went back to the ship- we were going to go out to Senor Frogs-but after dinner we wanted to see the shows and have fun on the ship, so we didn't get off again.
Cocao Cay- We docked and then tendered to the island-Think Disney meets the Bahamas- Everything is "royal carib" made- the employees on the island are all from Royal staff-the BBQ on the island was actually REALLY good! I was not expecting it to be so yummy! They had every BBQ item you could think of! They had waiters walking around with Coco Loco drinks/beer... plus they had the regular juice/fruit punch service set up.
They have all the water sports-parasailing,kayaks, a water "park" with bouncy things in the ocean- looked fun, but we didn't go, we rented two Mats and floated all day, drink in hand of course! MANY bars on the island-there are shops on the island, we didn't go though-jet skis-Calypso Band for dancing-
my only complaint was that there was not enough sand- and when I was walking around without my flip flops my feet hurt-it felt like concrete under there-
We spent the entire day there and headed back to the ship at about 4:00pm
the downside Turns out I got some sun poisoning...NO FUN! My face began to swell and my eyes were closing shut-We called the medical facility and they said that I should take Benedryl ...to come down- but that in order to open (since they closed for the day already) that it would be $70.00. I said forget it...Dh went to the stores on the ship and found benedryl.. I figured someone on the ship had to have it-there were kids there-many parents would have it-why spend the $$$ on the medical facility to open... Anyway, it didn't work... I am home now- and I look as if someone beat me up really bad- It is awful... BUT, we had fun!
We have heard that short cruises have "a different type of traveler" but we did not notice anything different! There were no more kids than any other cruise we have been on (except, Celebrity Med. Cruise) There were classy people and some classless people mixed in- like anywhere else-but overall, we were VERY pleased with the cruise! We WOULD recommend it to other people! We WOULD do a short cruise again, if we did not have the time to go on a longer cruise and we WOULD go back to the Bahamas!
There are pictures in my album and if you have any specific questions about something I didn't mention, please feel free to ask.
