Re: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World
We just went to Disney and we had a disabled pass, didn't get us onto any rides quicker. We had to wait on a different line, but it wasn't an instant pass to go on anything without waiting.

I only have been to disney world once. and I remember leaving at the end of the night to find wheel chairs just left by the exit of the park. I thought to myself, wow, disney world has some healing power.

All of the parents who WISH and DREAM that they could attend Disney WITHOUT worrying about a "disability entrance" should be able to line up and spit in their faces.

I have no desire to do the Disney thing with my kid. It's such a machine. But I also worry that she'd feel like she missed something if we don't take her.
I don't think so, she'll be fine ... I've never been. But eventually plan to one day.

...if there is a service, people will pay for it.
Seriously - I agree!
Sure the people who buy this service are disgusting, but look at the people at Dream Tours who actually provide this service...they're the ones that are gross!!!
Whatever good Ryan & Jacie are doing helping those in need are shot to hell with the way they're running this underground operation.

Re: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World
You know, I just read a post from someone in a group I belong to. She said her co-worker used a touring service last year, and it was the same situation with the guide using the scooter, however, they did NOT know this ahead of time. So I bet this company is not disclosing the disability aspect of the "touring" to their clients.
So to play devil's advocate, some of these vacationers probably liken it to Disney's VIP service but at a less expensive price tag. I would bet this company and it's owners get banned, and their annual passes are revoked. Hopefully that happens sooner than later!

Re: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World
Not surprised at all, I was just at Disney and learned that anyone can go to guest services and pick up a disability pass. You do not have to provide proof at all. I could go and say I'm diabetic or something and they would give one to me. Not that I would EVER do that, that is disgusting, but I'm sure that there are plenty of people who do just to not wait in line
IMO, I think Disney should ask for medical proof like a letter or something from a physician stating that their patient needs special accomodations at the very least. It is not discrimination to ask for proof, they have every right to and its not like people who go to Disney go on a whim, especially if there are health problems involved, no reason why they can't have this letter ready for the trip. The letter doesn't even have to state the disability by name to protect patient privacy.
Honestly, I wouldn't even be opposed to them getting rid of the exception altogether except in the most extreme of cases like a wheelchair that can't physically fit in the line. I read on a Disney forum over the past few months while planning a trip with adults who had diabetes, that were not disabled, they work and live life rather normally, getting the exception pass just because they can. IMO, that is not right.

legally they cannot ask for proof, same for airlines. You do need to be prepared to tell them your needs, and they will give you the appropriate stamp for your needs. I won't post the stamps, Disney frowns on that, but there are many different ones. A diabetic likely wouldn't have an issue that needs to be accommodated, so they likely wouldn't get a card with a stamp.
I always bring a note, they never want to see it. HIPPA laws I believe

But if they can't ask for proof than anyone can go and say they have a disability. Disney provides this as a courtesy, they can choose to ask for proof if they want as they are a private company, don't know if they have to follow the same guidelines as an airline.
I don't remember where I found that forum where people were posting about getting the passes for every type of illness there is, including diabetes, past heart attack, kids on the spectrum, etc.
As far as this company goes that hires disabled people to guide them, I hope that Disney finds out who they are and bans them for life!

Well then a note would do no good.
For the amount of legitimate needs, there is probably a small percentage that abuse the system, just like everything else in life. I don't forsee them changing their policies anytime soon. They are in the business of providing an enjoyable experience for all abilities and needs, and they do that quite well. Their policies are in line with the ADA, doesn't matter public or private.

Dd and I are hearing impaired. This post actually inspired me to look up what our options may be. I'm pleasantly surprised! They offer so much for dd! Front row seating to shows and captioning for certain rides. Fm systems! Wow!
It would totally break my heart to see children who have normal hearing take advantage of this. These people are disgusting. How could they not even feel any sense of guilt? Or maybe even a thought of Karma.

It is a hipaa violation to ask for proof. This is the same for airlines or even for booking the accessible room on cruises - they just have to take your word for it. Depending on the disability some just go on the fast pass line and others o go in the special entrance. We were just there with my cousin and her daughter who has autism and I felt embarrassed because her disability was not immediately apprent and I didn't want people to think we were taking advantage.

The ADA doesn't forbid asking for proof in certain instances like in school when kids are required extra time for exams and such, they are required to have a letter on file for this. It also doesn't include every health ailment known to man which seems to be where the problem lies with abuse of the policy. I think it is a wonderful thing that people with disabilities are able to enjoy Disney, and I don't doubt for a second that those with legitimate needs would do whatever they had to to prove that they are seeking these accomadations appropriately.

It actually isn't a violation to ask for proof of disability, they just can't ask specifically what the disability is. IMO being morbidly obese isn't a legit disability either, and that is also used to skip the line there, I've seen it with my own eyes. I have friends with children on the spectrum and they do not skip the line, yes the kids may get impatient waiting, but they want them to learn that you can't always have everything right when you want to. The kids are high functioning, the parents feel it would be very different if they weren't.

You read that person's medical records and determined that the only reason they got to skip the line was because they were morbidly obese?
Nice - did they show them to you openly, or did you have to ask for them to hand them over for your review?

No, its not a disability as defined by the ADA. Obesity of that nature is not caused by any ADA recognized disability that I know of. Can you name one?

My question was not "Is obesity a disability?" My question was "How do you know that obesity was the reason that this person opted for the special pass?"
