RINGWORM AT DAYCARE

So DH and I see a kid sitting by himself and we ask him whats wrong. The teacher says "leave him alone...he has ringworm"

Hello>>>> why didnt anyone tell us??? I was so pizzed off. I keep my kids home with the sniffles and now I have to worry about this crap

What makes me so mad is that the parents never TOLD the school. The teacher saw it and asked the parents and they said "oh yes--its ringworm"

wait until i see these parents!! wait!!!

Re: RINGWORM AT DAYCARE

Now for me, I would give them the benefit of the doubt before I fly off the handle. With ringworm, from what I understand, you are no longer contagious once you start treatment (or a couple of days after), so maybe the parents have been using the anti-fungal medication already and the child is not contagious anymore.

I'll be honest with you, daycare is just a breeding center of germs. When DS first started at 1 year, he had a nasty cold, ringworm, and pink eye all within the first 2 weeks. Chat Icon I just chalk it up to the fact that daycares are full of germs and that DS is going to catch some things.

Still not fun, though!!!

ETA: I thought the teachers were not supposed to give out information relating to other children's medical conditions. Even if he has ringworm, they are not supposed to tell you exactly who has it, just that someone in the room has it.

This was the best! I asked this and they said the parents needed to go to work....hello!!!! so do I!!!! and when my kids are sick or contagious I find/pay for other help

What makes me mad is that the parents were NOT honest. They tried to HIDE this until the teacher called them out on it

Yes, the ringworm would bother me, only if the parents were not treating it yet and they were trying to hide it.

But what bothers me more is that the teachers are giving you so much information about the other child and parents. This just encourages parents to confront each other which is why most daycares have confidentiality policies where they are only allowed to say that there is a child who has ringworm... and not specifically who has it and what the parent's reasons are for leaving the child at school. I know I would not want them giving out my information like that to other parents.

ew

just ew

We have a place for that here. Its called "Get Well Place". You pay $$$ but your child is in an environment for that illness. if its cold or pink eye, ringworm etc. they have little tiny rooms set up for them. if its not contagious or something treated and more than one has it they are put in the same room. They have nurses on staff, qualified to montior children, treat them and give them meds. From Fevers to Flu.

If AJ got really sick and I *HAD* to go to work then she'd go there. I'm luck tho to have that. If I didnt, well its part of parenting.. you stay home.

That said, yes I send AJ to school with a cold, cough, sniffle and runny nose.

Re: RINGWORM AT DAYCARE

It is unacceptable for the daycare to not notify parents that there was a case of ringworm in the center. And even more wrong that the parents didn't notify the center. Hopefully the child was on medication.

Last year, DS got ringworm from a kid at the school. A few days after we got the letter from daycare, we noticed the white patch on DS's head. When we took him to the doctor and he told us that once DS was on the oral meds for 48 hours he was not contagious anymore and could go back to school. DS's treatment for ringworm was 6-8 weeks of oral meds and a shampoo to use a few times a week.

I think this may depend on where the ringworm is and how bad it is.

When DS got ringworm about a week after starting daycare, all we had to do was buy over the counter anti-fungal cream (Lotriman) and use it for 7-10 days. He was allowed to go back to school after being on it for 48 hours and that was it for us.

He was not given oral meds and definitely did not have to use anything for 6-8 weeks.

Good point.... I guess I should have said that DS's treatment was 6-8 weeks. Didn't mean to imply that it was the the treatment for all cases.

Personally, I wouldn't take it up with the parents.....I would approach the director if you still feel angry about this situation. JMO. Good luck Chat Icon

Yep! Totally wrong. While a note should of been posted for you guys they had no right to tell you who had it. They can actually get in trouble for it.

I would just ask the director to make sure they have a note that he can return to day care and is currently being treated for the ringworm.

OMG seriously? So you'd rather go to work and risk your son infecting an entire class of children? That's lovely Chat Icon

And this is exactly why daycare centers have confidentiality policies that state they are not allowed to say specifically what child has what illness, contagious or not.

Personally, I think it's wrong to confront another parent about this. The issue is with the daycare and I would have spoken with the director. Just look at how crazy parents can get when their kids are playing sports. I can only imagine how heated parents can get when confronting other parents about bringing their sick/contagious kids to school.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that I would have been annoyed to see a child in the school with ringworm and that the center should have given a general warning to the parents, but I don't believe you should have ever been told who had it or had your DH confront the parent. JMO.

That is exactly my point. They knew about it and HID IT from the school.

When Parents start respecting the system then they could benefit from the system

The RULE is NOT to BRING CONTAGIOUS KIDS to school

They BROKE THE RULE
I dont care one bit about their privacy and my DH will stick up for our kids and the rest of the healthy kids in that class anyday
