dh and his dad just re-did our kitchen floor. they thought they were just ripping up one layer when surprise - there were 4 layers altogether! Chat Icon there's no special process, if they know how to rip up one layer, they can do it. it's just a huge pita and took forever.

Re: ripping up 2 layers of linoleum floor?

Is it linoleum or vinyl, there is actually a difference, especially if you know how old it is....
I have been doing some research and there is a good possbiblity that linoleum put down before 1979 has asbestos in it, which means when you start ripping it up it can release the friable which is the dangerous stuff..
We started ripping up our (5 layers) of floor this weekend, and now I am somewhat concerned about continuing it.
I mean on one hand, its such a small space, and the people who get asbestosis and lung cancer were exposed to it day after day for years. And if you take precautions, like wetting it as you rip it up and pulling it off in big chunks (don't sand it).. then the amount that would get into the air is very small.
But on the other hand... do I want to take that chance?

I'm not sure.. I have been doing some reading up on the asbestos linoleum and the say that if you are careful and rip it up in large pieces and also wet it as you do it, you should be fine.
I really don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars on asbsetos abatement. We already started taking it up so we have to continue. The one that I am concerned about was a tile, so as long as we don't ground the tile down (like sanding it) a very small amount of the friable would be released.

The cases of asbestosis are mostly from people who worked with it for years and years... but it is kind of scary.Chat Icon Chat Icon
