Risk of nuchal translucency test?
Hi. I just turned 30 last week and am 10 weeks, 2 days pregnant with twins. I am scheduled for a nuchal translucency test for Aug 29. I was just curious if anyone here has had that test and if there's any risk of miscarriage associated with it. I've read differing opinions about it online and I may want to just pass on it. Any ideas? TIA

Re: Risk of nuchal translucency test?
i think the nuchal is just a sono gram and blood taken from a finger prick if i am not mistaken. I think you are talking about the amnio and risks for m/c if i am not mistaken.
Good luck to you!

I agree. The nuchal is just an external sono (mine was at least) and a finger prick of blood.
The amino is the test that has a slight chance of miscarriage.

Re: Risk of nuchal translucency test?
Little to no risk. That's why it was a no brainer for me to try to have this test. I say "try" because the baby was never in the proper position. We went back twice and spent over an hour tryiing to wait for him to get into position. It was worth trying.

Re: Risk of nuchal translucency test?
The nuchal translucency test carries no risk. It simply measures the fat pad at the back of the babies neck. An increased fat pad is associated to babies carrying chromosomal anomalies. (thought to do with the increased incedence of these babies having heart defects) The NT part of the test is just a simple sonogram...The NT test is usually paired with an Ultrascreen blood test that tests for different levels in the blood. The NT test paired with the Ultrascreen Testing is considered a non invasive test and cannot diagnose the presence of a chromosomal anomalie it will simply say if there is a need for more invasive testing.

Re: Risk of nuchal translucency test?
I just had mine done about 2 hours ago. The baby was not cooperating much! I had to walk around, drink juice - they were jabbing the poor baby to get him/her to move. S/he actually put his/her hands up to my belly as if to say "stop it"!! It was funny. The problem is that they need very specific measurements and if the baby isn't positioned correctly, they can't take them and will make you come back. I am already 12 w 4 d, so I couldn't come back because I think you have to do it before 13 weeks. Drink juice before you go so that the baby is more active.

Re: Risk of nuchal translucency test?
Absolutely not. It's just a regular sono and a prick of the finger. I had mine today actually - not with twins.
I wouldn't skip out on this by any means. Last year I lost a baby due to a cystic hygroma on the back of the head - these are the things that the test looks for.
I had a sono on the belly and then an internal sono just to make sure the measurments were the same or similar.
Are you sure that you didn't read about the CVS test which you would be suggested to get if the nuchal fold shows something. That has risk of miscarriage.

I opted out of this test b/c it's less accurate with multiple pregnancies - you might want to inquire through your doctor.
