Riverhead Grand Juror Summons question
Has anyone ever served in a grand jury in Riverhead? If so how long did you serve? Was it everyday? What were the hours like? What should I expect going there?
I have to go on May 21st. My first time ever and I don't know what to expect. I am stressing out because I am a SAHM and I don't drive. I live in Ronkonkoma so I am wondering how in the hel I am going to get there and find a sitter.

You might not even get picked. A bunch of people go in you get a brief on the case the ask you a bunch of questions, then they decide if they want you. I did it, and it was for a week. If you get picked bring a book. I think I was in "court" a total of 2 hours the whole week.

Re: Riverhead Grand Juror Summons question
I went for Riverhead Grand Jury in January...it's the summons where it says you MUST report right, not calling in? It sounds like the same one I got.
I showed up on the date/time, and the gig was that if you're selected, you serve 4 weeks starting that day...it's M-F 8-4 or something like that, but you have to serve all 4 weeks if you're selected. And you can postpone it via mail ahead of time I believe (with documentation), or you can postpone it while you're there...but they tell you that you will be summoned again, I think it's within 6 months, if you postpone it. Lots of people were the primary caregivers of their children, and you could postpone for that reason, but they'd keep sending you a summons for every 6 months and you'd have to keep sending in documentation and postponing it.
So unless you had a strong reason to postpone, they said to 'consider yourself serving for the next 4 weeks'. They then put everyone in big raffle drums and picked names from there, filling a certain # of spots for 4 locations I believe. Once they reached their # for each location, everyone else who wasn't called was LUCKY (me included!) and is excused from Grand Jury Duty for 6 years I believe.

Yeah it says I must report. Are the 4 locations here in Suffolk?

Re: Riverhead Grand Juror Summons question
I served Grand Jury about 2 years ago.
I believe the 4 locations are: Hauppauge (The DA's building) Central Islip and I believe the other 2 locations are in Riverhead
I requested the Hauppauge location and got it. I served 4 weeks, but it was very rare that we did 8-4. It was more like 10/11am to 2pm. I enjoyed it.

That's good to know. I hope I can request something closer to me. Hauppauge would be so much easier for me.

Yes, those were the same locations for me I believe, or maybe they had 2 in CI and 1 in Riverhead, 1 in Hauppauge...I believe those depend on caseload. And when I went, you put your name in the specific location you wanted, and if they chose from that drum and yours was not chosen, you were then exempt, unless they didn't have enough at the other locations.
