Roadtrip with Infant?
How the heck do you keep them content/happy?
DD is 7 months and in a few weeks we're going upstate, a 3-4 hour car ride, during the day. What the heck do I do for her so she's not bored & cranky? I know we'll try to leave when she starts a nap, but that will last no more than an hour.
She hasn't been in the car for more than 45 min at a time at this point.

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
Are you sure she won't nap for most of the trip? I know for the long rides when we visit my inlaws at Cherry hill, he really sleeps for most of the trip....
I know its messy - but what about a teething biscuit if one of you sit back there with her while she's eating it?

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
We are driving to FL in March. DS just turned a year. I am a bit nervous, but, I figure, hopefully he will sleep. If he starts getting fussy, Mr. Portable DVD player will come in handy and ELMO or something will be playing for him (I or DH will sit in the back with him and hit the "Play" button. LOL. We plan on stopping often for "Potty breaks" and diaper changings. I plan on bringing snacks (which, of course will be supervised by one of us). We are going to leave very early in the AM (like 3 or 4) so he will hopefully, just go right back to sleep for a few more hours.

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
She may nap for longer if you are driving at a steady pace. Jack can nap for an hour and half in the car now.
Which mirror do you have? We have the FP one - forget the name - but he LOVES it.
Just bring lots of toys and sit in the back to play with her.
A bottle at some point I would imagine.
She'll be just great!

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
We have driven so many times from Boston to NY and vice-versa that I couldn't name the #. Anywhere from 4-7 hrs each way, depending on traffic, since my DD was 2 mos old.
I would recommend some Baby Einstein music CD's if you don't have a DVD player in your car; if you're willing to purchase a DVD player and know you'll be taking long rides in the future, I HIGHLY recommend it, if you're not opposed to movies/TV it's a great investment for your sanity! Both my babies love(d) the Baby Einstein DVD's and they'll hold attention well. Also singing aloud has helped many times, stopping for a bottle or if you give en route, and also, I found the babies sleep a LOT in the car. I think your 7 mo will love the long trip.
Good luck!

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
Thanks all! Great tips, I'm writing them all down!!
Another related question-- we can't leave until the afternoon, around 3pm. By about 6:30pm, DD is usually unwinding, getting cranky & ready for bottle & bed by 7pm. If she does nap for longer in the car, do you think it will affect her sleep that night? I know there's no way to tell, but what has been your experience?

We drove to Rochester for Thanksgiving, but we drove at night so DD slept the whole way, thankfully! That sure is some ride!

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
3-4 hours should not be so bad. Like you said, if you do it around her nap time, I am sure she will sleep longer than usual

We just did the car ride to Rochester and back. The first time was all during the day and he slept through most of it. The way back was later in the day into the night, past his bedtime. He still slept at night both times. The only thing that hppened on the later trip was he woke up when went to put him in his crib. He fed him a little and he went right to bed.

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
We drove from Merrick to Schroon Lake up by lake George when DD was 3 months. She slept most of the way. MY sister was in the back and sang to her and played with some toys. She loved the ride. WE also took some breaks to to get her out of the car.

Re: Roadtrip with Infant?
my dd was 5 months when I took her to GA for my mom's birthday. It was a 4 hour trip and she slept most of the time
maybe try to leave either early in the am or at night so she will be sleepy
most kids will fall asleep in the car on long trips
