Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
I was so upset to say the least. I know kids hit, pinch, bite but they never told me and blew it off like it was nothing. The friggin kid broke skin! They claim they didn't see it happen they just randomly went to push his sleeves up and saw it. Is that supposed to make me feel better that my child is not being supervised? I saw a girl practically fall out of her hi chair because her belt or tray weren't on, his teacher hasn't been there for days, and I'm sick to my stomach over his safety. Anyway... my question is how do your daycares handle these behavioral situations? I can say I am 99% sure who did it. There is a boy who is always hitting, grabbing and throwing himself at the other kids. One time the teacher screamed at him so loud it scared me. I noticed on several occasions there were no incident reports filled out either, this time was no different. Well any advise would be appreciated DH and I have a meeting with the director today ps pictures to follow, yes I took pics!!!

Re: Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
Biting is totally normal at this age, what I would take issue with is how it was handled. Whenever a child gets bit at my center I call the parent right away and let them know what happened. I also call the child's parent that did the biting to let them know what happened. We never tell the other parent who they bit or who did the biting. We are legally not allowed to tell you. (Once they get older the kids can tell you anyway)
I would definitely bring up that no one knew how it happened. I would find it hard to believe that your little one didn't cry after it happened especially if the skin was broken. If you keep noticing little things that bother you, I would bring those up with the director also. I hope he is feeling better!

Not a BTDT mom either but i do know human bites are dangerous when the kin is broken and they definitely should have called you. How many kids per teacher?

Re: Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
Hugs. I have been there. My child has been bit 4 times yup 4 times since starting daycare. The first daycare he was at it happened 3 (in under 3 months) times and like your daycare it was kinda of brushed off although I was notified on 2 of the incidents. I had to pull him out of that daycare becuase I worried for his safety. I has happened once at his new daycare but the shadow the biter and if the kid is a repeat offender they will be asked out of daycare.
That said. Biting is common when they are little and they say some kids are prone to being bitten. My kid is one of them since he is so passive. Not that that makes you feel better.
You should see the ped since it broke skin and I would ask what their policy is. If you are not happy with the answer it is time for a new daycare.

Re: Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
Nate was biten on the side of his face by a little boy. They told DH about it when he picked DS up. I was really annoyed that they didn't call us right when it happened. When I spoke to the owner, she told me that the kid is a known biter and they sometimes aren't quick enough to catch him. The little boy was "expelled" shortly after bc he started/tried to bite more often.
My problem now is hitting.... Nate is always hitting now. DH asked if he does this to the kids and one teacher said they all do it to each other at 16 -24 months. She tells parents to reprimand the child at home as much as possible.

The daycare definetly should have notified you. I would be concerned with all the other safety issues you mentioned as well. (not being properly strapped into hi-chair). If you don't get the answers from the director you are looking for, I would definetly get Roman out of there.

It happened to Andrew last week. He was bitten on the finger, but no blood. They told DH when he picked him up only and did not fill out an incident report. They chalked it up to toddler behavior and that it happens all the time. Great!!

Re: Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
Maddie was the biter for awhile; Joseph was the bite-ee at daycare. Both times we were called. With Maddie, we needed to sign an incident report.
I agree it's completely normal & VERY common. At one point, it's the way 1-2 year old children communicate. If a child is a repeat biter, I know my daycare will eventually boot the child.

- It was handled really poorly.

Here's my concern, how do they know if it's a repeat if there is no documentation. How convenient right?
I think my decision's been made.

I agree - they need to document it - if only for their own protection.
I think you're right to be concerned if the other parent isnt' filling out an incident report.

Re: Roman got bit at daycare, ? for BTDT Moms
My daughter works in a day care facility. If something like this happens, a parent is notified immediately and it is written up. The parent of the biter is, also, told of the incident and put on notice. It appears this was handled very poorly.
