Root Cover-up for Grays (Highlighted Hair)

So I did a search for this and found some ideas, but I wanted to see if anyone had some new advice for this issue.

I've been highlighting my hair for 20+ years. I just like how I look better with it lighter. (I have naturally dark-brown hair, I get blond highlights.) I used to be able to go twice a year, before I had greys. I actually liked how the darker roots looked with the blond lower half when my natural hair started growing in.

Anyhoo, I can no longer go twice a year due to my tremendous amount of greys. They actually start to become noticeable after 2 months. Do I get highlights every 2 months?! My hair is going to be so fried. But it looks awful right now, I have to do something. (The last time I got highlight was October).

So does anyone have this issue? Do you just get highlights every couple of months? Or is there some sort of root cover-up I could do at home that won't look horrendous?

I have dark brown/black hair with balayage and go every 2 months to get my grey roots touched up. In between, I touch them up at home with Loreal root touch up spray and precision pen.

You don't have to get highlights every time you need your grays touched up. They can just touch up your roots and you get your highlights on your usual schedule

Here is what i do.. I go for bayalage - 1-2 times a year.. it takes foever and my hair dresser knows i do not have patience to do it more often. So, in between i use a box ( medium brown was recommended by my stylist) on my roots . The greys are sorta out of control so i have to do a box one a month or so.. I also use the spray root cover up for in between if i cant get to the box or dont feel like doing it.
