When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?

I knew it would happen early for me (i'm 30)... my mom started coloring at 32 since she had a lot of gray hairs at that point. Ever since having DD they've been coming little by little. I only have a few that are visible at the top of my head but they are silver and thick! Ugh... I want to wait as long as possible, I hate using anything in my hair. Should I just pull them out (like I did when i saw the first couple)? Chat Icon

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?

Aww - sorry, it stinks. I probably started getting a few grays around 30-35 too. Since having DS I feel like I have A LOT more!!Chat Icon

I used to color just for the fun of it, but hadn't done it in a long time. I colored the other night b/c the grays were really annoying me.

I always used to pluck them, but now that there are more I don't. And honestly, when I did, they'd grow back in and be short, stubby little things that would stick straigh up. So, wouldn't really recommend that. Chat Icon

DON'T PULL THEM OUT! - advice from my hair person
Cut them really short at the root, if you have to.

I started coloring for fun at 15, I didn't even know I had grays till I took a break from it at 25.

I'm more worried about chemcials and stuff around DS, so I have only colored with really gentle semi-permanent colors on occassion. I'm cutting my little white hairs out for now.

Chat Icon I know I shouldn't pull them out but it's SO tempting! They are wild, they do whatever they want and are a totally different texture. I hate them. Thanks for the advice on cutting them at the root, i'll try that for now I guess.

I'm in your boat and it sux big time , plus my hair is very black so it's like that one strand of silver/white hair really shows!
I have few , like 3-4 (so far) so I just pull them out Chat Icon after reading this I'll just cut them at the root.
I am trying my best to stay away from color in my hair for as long as I can, I love my hair!Chat Icon

Oh and I read somewhere that "just for men" is the best color for women who only have few strands of gray hair , bc it only covers white hair.

I did it for my first time last March (2010) and then again just recently (right before Christmas).

I'm 35. I probably could've done it sooner, but, was chicken! LOL Chat Icon

Ive been grays for longer than I can remember. I'm not even joking when I say i'm at least 90% gray. I have to color my hair every 3 weeks or so. If I have nothing going on I let it go longer because it doesn't bother me to much. Everyone in my life knows about it so there's nothing to hide...lol.

I'm like you & never colored my hair before. My grays are growing in more & more & I do pluck them because they aren't that bad. Coloring seems like such a huge commitment & too much maintenance for me.

Me too. I think I started going grey at 18. First I did highlights to hide the greys, but that got pricey since they grew out quickly, so now I color at home every month or so. It is what it is..LOL...glad i'm not a man and am not ashamed to admit to anyone that I color my hair.

My best friend has been coloring her hair to cover the grey since college. Her hair is really dark so it really shows if she doesn't.

First of all - they are not gray hairs - they are "light black highlights". At least that's what I tell myself.

I would do it when it started to bother you or when someone asked you how old your granddaughter was. Chat Icon

There are products like root touch-up that just wash out after a few washes, that's what I started w/ b/c I wasn't ready to commit to doing it every 4-8 weeks (depending on how fast hair was growing).

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?

I pluck them out. Since having my two kids its gotten bad but not bad enough that I can't pluck them all out. I am 33 now.

I know its bad but, honestly, I don't want to walk around with grey hair and, don't love the idea of chemicals in my hair and having the constant maintenance. So I'm sure that's why they are multiplying - what's the saying - when you pull one out they come back with friends Chat Icon Chat Icon

cutting them out doesn't work fo rme. I have curly hair so the strraight stub just tsticks up then!

Um - as soon as I start to see them !!!

NO reason to walk around w/ grey hair when it can be easily fixed IMO

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?

I've been noticing more and more since becoming a mom. They're not really on the top so I'm not as motivated to start coloring my hair. Right now I just cut them. Chat Icon I highlighted my hair for a very short time in college. Other than that, I've never colored my hair. I don't really want to start just yet.

do not pull them out. take the plunge and dye. if you do not want to dye ~ sometimes getting highlighs will take the focus off them.

Even you are not ready to commit to coloring just do highlights. I am also not into completely dying my hair and I tried highlighting for the first time about a year ago. It doesn't take that much maintenance and if you decide to let it go it doesn't show roots like dying.

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?

Lurker here... but I just had to say I'd kill to start getting grays in my 30's... I started when I was 16... no exaggeration... I'd say for about 10 yrs now, I've been dying my hair once a month... I try to go as long as I can but its soo hard when you have a huge gray patch in the front of your head Chat Icon Just dont pluck them... it doesnt help much altho i did used to have fun doing it LOL
