discussing this at work and no one really knows for sure. What is the role of the Royal Family? Do they still have power? Who supports them?

Just a topic that came up at work. TIA

It's tradition. They are ceremonial heads of state.

They are figureheads. They do receive a salary made up of taxpayer dollars to act in an official capacity (ribbon cuttings, etc) but they pay more in taxes for their personal income than they receive from the taxpayers.

public money and many private income. they make more money for the country then what they're paid (this is what is said.) The queen is in charge of appointing archbishops and bishops. She is the defender of the faith. Now the extent of that i am not sure.

My grandmother was a catholic brit not a part of the church of england.

private income is based from the income they earn on their appearances, probably sales of items/interviews, etc, their homes generate income, inheritances, there is a lot of business in what they do.

Most of their money is inherited (so I'm guessing they receive dividends from investments). They actually do not own the palaces, jewels and such, those are property of the country. I know the Prince of Wales has some kind of commercial business that makes him money as well.

Isn't it nice? They basically get paid to exist. Chat Icon

Royal Family question

They do actually have some power that many people don't know about. The Queen and Prince Charles do have some ability to veto new laws proposed by Parliament.

This article talks about their veto powers: Guardian

It's not a crazy amount of power, but it's more than just ceremonial like many assume.

Re: Royal Family question

We, the UK taxpayers support the Royal Family, the svergwe person pays about .68p a year towards their upkeep ( that's like $1 a year) they are major landowners, farmers and business people. Prince Charles Owen a big organic food company, you can buy his cookies at any supermarket!

The Queen is 87 and she makes like 400 public appearances a year....that's a pretty crazy schedule for an elderly lady!
