Rubber Mulch for Play Area?
Anybody have it in their children's play area?
What are your opinions on it?

Re: Rubber Mulch for Play Area?
I dont have any children so no play area, but I did take my niece to an indoor play place and they had an area with the rubber mulch and OMG...did they kids get sooooooooooo dirty!! it was like the black from the tires was rubbing off!! When my niece left the play area, her white shirt was filthy!! I was told that this was brand new, so maybe thats why it was so dirty.

Hmmmm...I never thought of that! Not that my DD stays very clean when she's outdoors anyway.

Re: Rubber Mulch for Play Area?
We installed it earlier this year. The mulch looks great even after 6 months of heavy use.
Pros : - Keeps kids safe. We had a few big falls this summer, and the kids just seem to bounce when they hit the ground. - Stays clean. Dogs and cats are really not interested in it.
Cons : - Does get hot in the sun - Cost compared to other options
The stuff is heavy so expect shipping costs to be high.

Re: Rubber Mulch for Play Area?
We decided against it.
When we bought our playset from Creative Playthings, their manufacturer of rubber mulch went out of business. They had another company that we could have used, but since they were so new they couldn't guarentee the product.
Some things the sales guy told us.
You have to buy high qulaity rubber mulch and it's $$$$ - And it would have been really $$$$ for the area we did.
Less expensive rubber mulch can be toxic and the color will stain your shoes and clothes.
We have a huge area for the kids so my husband and I grated the area, put new soil down and about 12 inches (deep) of black mulch down. It's soft (so the kids can run with no shoes) and looks great.

I wouldn't do it. It can stain and can be toxic, plus it gets very hot on warm days and can burn kids.
Just leave the grass there.
