rugs under your dining room tables?

I have wood floors and my mil said i have to get a rug to put under the dining room table so i wont scratch up the floors....does anyone else do this???? and where is the best place to get a rug.....if you have pics also i would love to see...Thanks

well you don't have to put a rug there if you don't want to. Some people like it some don't. You can put felt (sp) on the bottom of all the chairs and table so you don't scratch the hardwood floors.

I don't have a rug in my DR and I don't want one. I like how they look, but to me its just another thing to worry about getting dirty and having to vacumn.

It's a personal choice.

I did not want a rug and instead have the felt to protect the floors.
To me a rug underneath the table is just one more thing to clean.

with two young children, I do not have an area rug under my dining table. (wood floors) I do have the felt on the chairs & table. (Lowes) I like the "look" but not the hassle.

We didn't want a rug underneath our table for 2 reasons:

1. I didn't want to worry about food or beverage stains on very visible rug. It's much easier to wipe up a wood floor!

2. our chairs are solid mahogany and really heavy to move, so a rug would have only made it even more difficult. We placed felt pads on the bottom of the chairs and they glide across the floor...no scratching.

we have a rug under our dining set b/c

1. we have concrete floors.

2. we have a great room with the living room and dining next to each other. the rugs separate the areas.

3. we got a casual one, so if food spills on it, it's not that big of a deal.

It definately is a personal choice. We didn't have one until about a month ago. We have tile floors in the dining room & just felt the room was missing something. Once we added the rug, it completed the room. We got ours from Lowes

I definately agree with the other posters above though, you can get the felt bottoms for the chairs & the table at any store. We have them on all our furniture just so they slide a lot smoother

We have one because I hate wood floors. And I like the way it looks.

I have a rug under my table. I believe I got it from HSN.com at a very reasonable price.

No rug. I just use the felt pads. I've even seen them in grocery stores.

I've had it both ways. I had the wood floors with the felt on the bottoms of the chair legs and I hated that! The felt was always coming off and it was just a real pain!

My brother moved and gave us his old Pottery Barn rug, so we used it in our dining room and its much better! I actually like how it looks.

I have 3 little kids and definitely could not inflict their table skills on a poor rug. We have the felt pads too. I got them at home depot, the kind you hammer into the bottom of the chair legs are the best IMO. - no damage to your chairs, they just stay better than the stick on kind.

like everybody else said, it really just depends on what you like. our room is a great room- big, open, combo living room/dining room.. the whole room has wood floors, which i LOVE, but i wanted the rug to break up the wood a little bit since its such a big room. we don't have kids yet, so who knows if i'll take it away once we do- lol. but, we'll probably just use the kitchen table most of the time then...

those felt pads are great, though! they sell them all over- i think i got mine from ikea. even on the tile floors, they just help the chairs slide better...

it def depends on what you like. we dont have a rug. LIke other people have posted I dont want to have to worry about staining or cleaning another rug. I have one in the livingroom and I clean it like crazy and it gets stained

we have felt under each chair and table.
