Runners (both experienced and not), I need to know...
realistically, how long do YOU think it would take a person to go from zero to running a half-marathon?
This question doesn't necessarily pertain to me because I'm pregnant now and not currently running. However, I did the C25K last summer and at the end of it ran a 5K...but barely. I really struggled with this even though I ran at least 3x/week.
I know everyone is different, so I'm just looking for anecdotal evidence I suppose...

Re: Runners (both experienced and not), I need to know...
I am not sure but this is my experience so far.
I did the C25k last summer and continued to run 3-4 miles at least times a week. Then the winter came and I pretty much stopped exercising all together. I started back up running in April but I have not been consistent with it. However I have upped my mileage to 4-5 miles per run. I plan to start training for the DIVA Half Marathon next week. If I commit myself to it I KNOW I can do it. The problem it committing myself and sticking to it. I am afraid that if we keep having these heat waves I may not get all the training in.
IMHO realistically you can do anything you want if you REALLY want to do it and COMMIT to it. BUT I know this is easier said than done as this is something I am struggling with myself.

For me, I started running three times a week last May (2009), and by this May, I ran the LI half marathon. Of course, it was a pretty slow pace (10:45 miles) but I still finished it. Everyone is different, but it took me about a year to get to that point without adding too many miles or injuring myself.

Yeah same here, it took me about a year from doing a walk/run program then started doing 5K's last summer, then increasing my distance over the fall & winter, and finally by this spring I was ready for the half marathon.

I would imagine it depends on your committment and motivation, but I have read stories of people running marathons onn less than 1 year of running, so a half marathon could definitely be done in less than 6 months. I think you would need at least 3 months though.

I started the C25K last April and this past May I ran the Long Island Half as well. I definately could have run it in about 6 months but I took my time and in between did lots of 5K and 10K's. I think 6 months is a realistic time.
