Need advice from experienced runners
I decided I am going to start running again which I have not done in probably 5 yrs, maybe more I know it is the best way for me to get the baby weight off and get my fat arse back into shape. I found an 8 wk plan online that will help get me back into running slowly to build up my endurance.
Anyway, being I haven't ran in so long I have a few questions.
If I run early in the morning should I eat or drink anything besides water before hand? I dont want to get cramps in my sides.
Where should I buy a good pair of running sneakers b/c I dont want to get shin splints? A running watch? Running shorts, etc.?
What kind of stretches should I do before I run? Should I do any when I am done?
Any other advice would be helpful!

I think this really depends on you. If I am running first thing in the morning, I eat nothing. If I have an hour to kill before my run, I will eat a bowl of cereal, wait an hour, and then run.

If you are close to Farmingdale, I suggest Runner's Edge of Main St. They are very knowledgeable about what shoes will work best for you.
A running watch? Running shorts, etc.?
You can get both of these at Target for a reasonable price.

I just got back into it a few weeks ago, so congrats!!!
Going slow is the best thing for me. I am keeping up wtih it and enjoying it!

Like PP said, I have cereal and then wait an hour. I can't leave the house without eating, so I have to have something. However, I also have seen that the cramps also have to deal with how much water I drank and my breathing. Breathing makes a difference.

I got my sneaks at Super Runners Shop in Hunt. Village. Try on RUNNING sneakers and go wtih what is comfy. Don't go by brand. I also wear regular workout clothing but invest in sports bras. I use a timex ironman iwth an interval timer and chronograph. there was a recetn thread about it. It might be on page 2 or 3 of this forum.

I cool down by walking and then stretch a little AFTER I run. Nothing crazy.
Any other advice would be helpful! Breathe. Keep a log. Go Slow!!!!! Slow and steady!

Re: Need advice from experienced runners
I don't eat anything before a run - maybe a banana for a long run. If I run in the evening - I need at least an hour or more after i eat...so I'm very conscious of not eating if I have to run.
I learned very early (16ish) once you find a shoe you like, stick to it. It may be trial and error for a bit, but I would go to a running store for help. If you are close to Huntington, I second the Super Runner Shop on NY Ave (just south of Main) - but I buy my sneakers at the Nike Outlet now in Bellmore.
As for clothes - again - I don't use anything fancy - except good sports bras...I love my champion ones.
I have a Garmin watch I got on amazon - it's a great watch, but I rarely use it, unless I'm going on trails. I don't like have a watch on. or I'll loop it to my draw string and out it inside my shorts.
If you only have time for a little streching - it's more important to stretch after. Before and after, I will stand cross my legs and drop down. spread my legs and drop left, middle, right. Stand and pick up a foot. Sit down with soles of feet together - lean in. sit with the sole of one foot next to the inside thigh and reach for the far foot. put one foot next to opposite outside thigh and put opposite elbow to opposite knee (did that make sense? it's a back stretch) - these are all stretches that we did in x-country and track in HS and they have really never failed me.

I run early in the morning and i alwasy eat. whole wheat toast with peanut butter or honey. you shoudl have something in your stomach. its good to have protein in the PB and carb in the WW. drink about 8 oz along with it but give yourself 30-45 in before hitting the road.
sports authority type place for the outfit. go to a running store for the shoes. they can look at your feet and give you a better choice of sneaker.
CALF and HAMSTRINg are very important in runners. hips too....
