running and TTC
has anyone heard that this could affect ovulation and your cycles?
I've had two sets of friends recently tell me this could be causing the problem with my cycles.
Background: I run about 3-4 times a week, I was recently training for a half-marathon which I did last weekend, so I'm done training for a while. I rarely get my period (I've had only 2 periods since April). I'm not a fast runner, but I run long distances, no longer than 2 1/2 hours at a time though. And also before BC I rarely got my period, and I was not running back then.
Do you think the running could be causing a problem in my cycle or am I just highly irregular?

Have you spoken to a doctor regarding why your periods are so irregular?

I've been checked in and out and he said everything looks fine (no blood testing though). i have another apptmt next week, so hopefully he''ll do more testing.

What has been done so far?
I'd think you would need blood testing and other things done just to be sure.
I don't think we can really tell if it's the running or your cycles in general. I think the general rule is that if it's affecting your menstruation, then it could be affecting your fertility - but in your case, I don't think we can really separate the two enough to figure out the cause.

I don't think running is your problem. I've read previous posts about your cycles and you really should have CD3 bloodwork done to rule out PCOS. From my own experience and spending 2 years on the IF board, it sounds to me that PCOS can be your issue.

Web MD says:
Causes of irregular periods can be:
--Excessive weight loss or gain. --Eating disorders --Increased exercise. Missed periods are common in endurance athletes. --Emotional stress. --Illness. --Travel. --Medicines such as hormonal birth control methods, which may cause lighter, less frequent, more frequent, or skipped periods or no periods at all. --Hormone problems. This may cause a change in the levels of the hormones that the body needs to support menstruation. --Illegal drug use. --Problems with the pelvic organs, such as imperforate hymen, polycystic ovary syndrome, or Asherman's syndrome. --Breast-feeding. Many women do not resume regular periods until they have completed breast-feeding.

Yes, i thought that too but my doc did an external and internal sonogram so if there were cysts he would have seen them, right? i know the blood testing will help me determine, but my CD 3 was Wed. and my doc was out for the holiday. Since I rarely get my period, getting an apptmt on CD 3 is very difficult! I don't know how to get around this, is there any other way to test for PCOS?

Thank you for posting! Since i'm done training, i won't be doing any more endurance (long) runs for a while. Maybe this will make a difference in my cycles or not, but I'm hopeful!

Not necessarily - I have PCOS, but don't have the classic cysts on my ovaries. But all my bloodwork pointed to PCOS.
Unfortunately, CD3 is the optimal time to get tested as your hormone levels are at their baseline. Anything later than that, it will be hard to determine. My first set of PCOS bloodwork was done when I was something like CD55, my OB said I had PCOS based on that bloodwork, but once I moved to the RE, they discounted that because you can't get accurate results that late into your cycle.

Thanks, I didn't realize that about not being able to see the cysts. I will start reading up on it.
So my apptmt is on CD 12- should I get some bloodwork done? I mean it could be another 2-3 months before i get to another CD 3.
