Running in a 5k, but not a runner -Can it be done?

My bro in law is running in 5k's.
Does them every Mon and asked me to
tag along.
He times himself but dosent register. Does it for the excercise.

Can I just jump into them without training for them? or is that a bad idea?

I know I can go at my own pace.

I do cardio kickboxing every wk so I have some stamina, lol.

What do you think?

Its really bad form to 'bandit' a race - which is running a race without registering/paying the fee.

ok, sorry didnt know.

So say WE do register...which from what I hear is not a lot anyways,

is it too much to "jump" into a 5k
without training or being a runner?

I am sure people do it. My husband goes months without running then will randomly go out for a run with me and do fine.

Personally, I like to know I can run the distance and give it a shot at least once before a race. While 3.1 miles isn't that far and you are in good shape so many other factors can come into play too (weather, for one!).

Good luck if you decide to do it!

i thnk it depends on your fitness level in general. i mean if you are sedentary and never exercise i say no way...if you regularly go to the gym or walk etc. i think you could....but i wouldn't run like a madwoman and try to "win" Chat Icon just take it easy and do it to finish instead-take it easy.

If you work out regularly your endurance should be good - I think you could probably hold your own. Even if you had to take walking breaks, its just 3 miles.

I ran my 1st 5K without training, and did pretty well... as long as you focus on finishing, and not time, you should be ok!

It can totally be done. You may end up doing run/walk intervals. As long as you're going at YOUR pace, and not trying to keep up with an experienced runner who is going faster than you're comfortable with, it can be done. Just make sure you stretch well and wear running shoes. Chat Icon

a lot of people walk entire 5Ks...so if you are having trouble, it's not unusually for people to walk.

If you cardio kickboxing class is 45-60 minutes - i think you probably have the stamina for a 5K

I agree with this- you should have the stamina but walk breaks are OK.
I find that some non-runners have no concept of distance. For example my aunt walks every morning and told me she walks "miles"... I mapped her walk on map my run and she walks 1 mile. Chat Icon
A 5k will be equivilant to approx 12.5 laps on a 400 meter track.

I think you can do it, absolutely. But please keep in mind that running is completely different that any other cardio workout.

If you keep in mind that you can be strong in kickboxing and not as strong with running (when you start off).

I also agree with the previous poster that you should register for the race rather than jump into one. It's poor etiquette.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Running in a 5k, but not a runner -Can it be done?

Running a 5K is not easy to just jump into. People train for months for it. But given that you are active I would say that you could finish it, you just may not make as good of timing as you would if you trained. I've done kickboxing and I am now a runner and I will tell you running outside in a 5K is much more difficult then any kickboxing class I did. The weather is essential and keeping pace with others can be difficult. That being said, I say register and go for it. Just be prepared that you may have to walk for part of it.
