SAHM Social Scene: Do I have to be fashionable to make playdates with fashionable moms?

OK, so I feel my middle school insecurities setting in!

I just moved from Boston to Westchester, and am feeling very unfashionable. Boston was moms in sneakers and t-shirts. Here it looks like designer jeans and strappy sandals. I'm way out of my trendy league.

So, do you think that having kids is enough in common to become friends, or do I have to dress the part to get past first impressions?

What do you think?

I think you should stay true to who you are - whether it's jeans and sneakers or something designer! If it would make you feel more comfortable, maybe dress up a little more than you normally do.

I would stick with what you are comfortable in. Who cares what the other ladies think.

I would stay who you are and how you dress with some modifications. Every where you live has some sort of "dress code". Here in CA, if I walked around in dressy clothes, I would feel out of place. Its definately more of a flip flop type place. Maybe you could just dress up your usual outfits. Chat Icon

I have to admit that I dress very casually, but at least make sure that I've done my hair, put on a bit of makeup, on days that I have to bring DD to school. Some of the moms look SO put together.

I don't think you need to go all out and get fancy clothes --- be true to who you are, but I do understand how you feel nd it gives me just a little bit of a push when I get ready in the AM.

Be true to yourself - and wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. If a mom doesn't want to talk to you or get to know you b.c of what you wear - do you really want to be friends with someone like that anyway?

brace yourself, this is only the beginning...

i grew up in scarsdale so i know the drill Chat Icon my parents never fit in, neither did i really. i hated being a teenager in that environment, but now that i'm older i am happy that my parents raised me the way they did and we never fit in Chat Icon.

don't worry, you'll find your niche, there are SOME down to earth people in the land of crazy competition and snobbery Chat Icon. if it makes you more comfortable to dress the part a bit, do so, but don't change who you are...so not worth it...

I don't think this story is indicative of the area, or of people who enjoy designer clothing--so I am not judging-- but I will tell it anyhow...

Last year, when I became a SAHM, I enrolled DD and myself into a mommy and me type thing in Manhasset--of Miracle Mile fame Chat Icon Now, I am a person who basically lives in Gap clothing, but half of the moms in the group wore strictly designer--but they were very clique-ish and had the attitude to match. At first I was uncomfortable there, but each week, I found myself gravitating toward 3 other moms who were more like "me." Today, a year later, the four of us have become close and still see each other every week--I thank God I joined that group, or else I'd probably currently be in an asylum. Chat Icon

The point is, be yourself and you'll fit in just fine--and in the end, you'll probably find that there are a lot of moms around just like you. And for what it's worth...after that 1st group ended in Dec., the moms that rejoined with me for the rest of the school year were pretty much Gap gals too--so don't assume EVERYONE where you are is dressed up all the time--even on the Miracle Mile!

Good luck!!!

Ditto on all this (except while I do live in Scarsdale technically, I'm in the unflashy, Gap wearing, outskirts part of town Chat Icon Chat Icon)

I am so not designer and my address is Bronxville (very similar to Scarsdale). I'm usually wearing Gap, Old Navy, Target. Seems like there are a bunch of us LIFers who you'll fit in with!!! Chat Icon

I agree with this. I know a lot of moms in Staten Island are in sweatsuits and such...I never see any moms down here wearing that.

The moms down here are mainly polished. Not crazy with name brands, but clean and fresh looking...crisp jeans, polo shirts...I never see uggs or sneakers.

So, I adapt...the moms here are also on the older side. Conservative dressers.

So, I have adapted to the plaid bermuda shorts and flats...very rarely t-shirts and jeans.

If there was a mom who judged me by the type of clothing I chose to wear, I wouldn't want to be her friend.
