Sandals Resorts...did you know...
they do not allow same sex couples to vacation there?
I find this horrible and am surprised I have never heard of it.
My friend is getting married at a Jamaica one in July and she jokingly said to a phone rep that she didnt want to spend the night before the wedding in the room with her husband, so she would be sharing it with her friend( a girl) and vice versa with her husband to be...Now she didnt even need to tell them this, BUT they said" Oh no, thats not allowed"...
She asked "why, what if it was my actual Girlfriend or his actual Boyfriend...and they replied , we dont allow same sex couples.
We thought maybe he was just crazy, so two of us called there and another Sandals at work today and they verified that as well..
I think its awful...

thats what my friend getting married said..how come we never heard of them being sued for discrimination...she was kinda upset. She has a gay family member, who while is not going to the wedding there, but she was saying, HOW embarrasing for them it would have been if her family member brought her girlfriend and was turned away???

Re: Sandals Resorts...did you know...
Sandals Resorts, which operates 12 beachfront resorts in the Caribbean, has agreed to let gay couples enjoy their resorts.
The ban on gay duos had been in place since 2001, and Sandals followed up the ban with a controversial ad campaign. The "Love is all you need" campaign said Sandals resorts for "romantic, mixed-sex couples only".
So let us get this straight. For the past three years the only couples, allowed at these couples only resorts were heterosexual romantic couples? That sounds like a fairly small market segment you are going after Sandals.
We wonder if Sandals lifted the ban on gay couples to a) increase revenues b) buckle under the increasing public pressure c) find out if homosexual couples are any more "romantic" than dull, mundane heterosexual couples.
Welcome to the 1990's Sandals, oh wait, it is 2004.

Re: Sandals Resorts...did you know...
It is horrible!
But keep in mind the Owner is not American, he is from Jamaica and none of their hotels are in the US. They don't have to follow our etticut (sp?). I am travel agent and in the company I work for I know of a manager that was gay (he passed away) and he used to go to Sandals all the time. He booked his room with a female friend and in the other room was his partner and another female friend and they switched rooms. Sandals had no clue as to what they were doing. It could possibly happen all the time and Sandals would be none the wiser.

Yes, unfortunately it IS legal... the law only protects against discrimination re: race, religion, national origin and sex. Although people would think that this is sex discrimination, most courts don't consider it to be, and that sex discrimination does not include sexual orientation discrimination. It amazes me that our country still allows this kind of discrimination and continues to treat a class of people in this manner - this is the one area of civil rights that has leaps and bounds to go. Hopefully, by the time my kids are honeymooning, it will be a different world!
